Country populations, mostly 2017, a few 2016. No particular relevance to anything, I just like this stuff:
China 1,386,800,000 India 1,322,280,000 United States 325,896,000 Indonesia 261,890,900 Pakistan 209,167,000 Brazil 208,098,000 Nigeria 193,500,543 Bangladesh 163,269,000 Russia 146,809,643 Japan 126,670,000 Mexico 123,364,426 Philippines 104,709,000 Egypt 95,877,600 Ethiopia 94,351,001 Vietnam 93,700,000 Germany 82,800,000 Democratic Republic of the Congo 81,339,988 Iran 80,488,800 Turkey 79,814,871 Thailand 69,037,513 France 67,135,000 United Kingdom 65,648,100 Italy 60,525,277
Tanzania 57,310,000 South Africa 56,521,900 Myanmar 53,370,609 South Korea 51,446,201 Kenya 49,699,862 Colombia 49,438,700 Spain 46,528,966 Argentina 44,044,811 Ukraine 42,456,012 Algeria 41,697,498 Sudan 40,782,742

You'd have thought China and India could find at least 11 decent national footballers from that lot...

I think it's amazing how all these countries keep their population to round figures. Is there some kind of birth control going on or maybe an official impregnator?

The population of Ethiopia has more than doubled, from 48m to 102m since 1990. That is a remarkable statistic.
The population of Indonesia is the one that surprised me the most. I like stats and I like populations, but I'd have never guessed their population was so high.
Heard on the radio earlier, that the birth rate of China is such that they produce the equivalent of the population of Iceland every WEEK!

Also interesting that Japan & Russia have decreasing populations due to low birth rates. The Japanese population is likely to dip below 100 million by 2050.

One cant help but feel certain countries need social policy to assist with their lack of local resource

I suspect they need a miracle. I expect the other demographic is that over 50% of the population is under 25 - it was 73% in Oman a decade ago and it looks the same when you go to Africa.
Plus: the Saudi and gulf Arabs are buying up the best land and the Chinese are actually exporting their population - look at the hiring policy of Chinese infrastructure companies.

I would recommend 'Prisoners of Geography' by Tim Marshall: www.goodreads.com/book/show/25135194-prisoners-of-geographyTo quote the back of the book: 'if you've ever wondered why Putin its so obsessed with Crimea, why the USA was destined to become a global superpower, or why China's power base continues to expand ever outwards, the answers are all here'. Thoroughly researched and interestingly put together. A recurring theme is Chinese expertise cropping up all over the Third World in just about every sphere of influence. (Other booksellers are available).

Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad, or maybe my older brother Colin, or maybe my younger brother Ho-Cha Chu. But I'm pretty sure it's Colin.

Nigeria has a huge population of 193 million and this is set to increase to 300 million by 2050. A huge increase.

Here are populations for 1950 and projected populations for 2050:
Rank 1950 population (000) 2050 population (000)
1 India 357,561 1,572,055 x 4.4 2 China 554,760 1,462,058 x 2.6 3 United States of America 157,813 397,063 x 2.5 4 Pakistan 39,659 344,170 x 8.6 5 Indonesia 79,538 311,335 x 3.9 6 Nigeria 29,790 278,788 x 9.3 7 Bangladesh 41,783 265,432 x 6.3 8 Brazil 53,975 247,244 x 4.6 9 Dem. Rep. of the Congo 12,184 203,527 x 17.0 10 Ethiopia 18,434 186,452 x 10.1 11 Mexico 27,737 146,651 x 5.3 12 Philippines 19,996 128,383 x 6.4 13 Vietnam 27,367 123,782 x 4.5 14 Iran 16,913 121,424 x 7.1 15 Egypt 21,834 113,840 x 5.2 16 Japan 83,625 109,220 x 1.3 17 Russian Federation 102,702 104,258 x 0.2 18 Yemen 4,316 102,379 x 23.8 19 Uganda 5,210 101,524 x 19.5 20 Turkey 20,809 98,818 x 4.8
India overtakes China. Countries like Congo, Yemen and Uganda show mind-blowing increases. The Third World can't be fed today. Let's hope scientific advances find a way to feed the extra billions by 2050, as it's difficult to see population increases being curtailed.

It's counterintuitive for the global human race to grow so quickly.
Yet economic growth thrives off it.

Those predictions are actually quite scary but not surprising. Birth rates are obviously a major issue in certain countries as well as longevity of life increasing in others. I suspect there will be a breaking point and some sort of reset in the future, either a catastrophic nuclear war, a major outbreak of an untreatable disease, or the earth is hit by a massive meteorite. Bit depressing isn't it.

Those predictions are actually quite scary but not surprising. I think they are very scary. Some of the most populous countries - particularly China and India - will have, and already have, burgeoning middle classes demanding more consumer goods (possibly a good thing, possibly not given depleting resources) and a western diet that will be increasingly difficult to satisfy. Most of the world population will remain poor and powerless, but in massively greater numbers. Half of Bangladesh's land area is already prone to annual flooding. It doesn't bear thinking about the problems that an extra 20/50/100 million Bangladeshis will face.

Also appear to be rapid growth in countries with multiple domestic issues be it famine, poverty, anti-liberalism, or internal conflict. Ultimately Malthusian theory will take the human race apart
