Cologne had 2000 odd tickets but 20,000 have turned up apparently and some are fighting with stewards and yes, letting off flares!....

Have to feel sorry (?) for the 2,500 fans of Everton who travelled to Atalanta (Where the Donald duck?) only to witness an abysmal performance and their heroes went down 3-0.

Saw some video footage earlier of the cologne fans walking through somewhere in London, a few thousand of them with only a few old bill in sight, if that was fourty Oxford/any other English club then the same old bill would have mobilised an army of men, horses, vans and a helicopter. See the game may kick off at 9.05 but now it's kicking off inside the ground.

Heard them earlier from work in Soho, great noise. Imagine the press if this was British fans in Germany, though.

How many British football fans die as a result of flare use per year? Last one to perish was back in '93: www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-35402735 . Considering how few flares are lit in UK stadia in general, I guess statistically these can be considered highly dangerous?

So if we ban things at grounds that are harmful without being deadly, then no beer or fast food should be served at football grounds? I know you act stupid sometimes for the sake of creating an argument but you do realise that there is a sliding scale of harm right? Beer and fast food are often consumed by choice and in moderation can be entirely harmless. Smoke bombs create an acrid smoke that can cause discomfort and harm (possibly serious) to many unwittingly caught in the same area. Really not difficult to understand so please stop playing dumb!

How lucky were the old bill that this happened against Arsenal, could of got very serious against other big London clubs, and would if caused riots had they tried walking down the Tottenham high road like that. I am sure Jeremy and Hugo gave the Cologne fans a good tutting though, Arsenal being the most gentrified football club in the world saved the metropolitan dibble even more embarrassment, especially considering that the papers were reporting the numbers coming over days ago.
Even when we went to the old ground years ago under Atkins it was a bit easy, I remember drunk Oxford fans just walking around singing in small groups before the game with no police in sight, absolutely no menace to going there at all for years now, where as that's not true of their rivals.

Pretty sad, all the reaction to this. arsenal fans felt scared, etc. Shows how plastic we have become. This is an extreme example of what the Germans call "fan culture". I've been to a couple of games in Germany this year. - Dortmund and BM - and this is normal behaviour except that the extreme numbers obviously are going to cause problems. But I don't see that the fans have particularly misbehaved in terms of fighting etc. It's called giving your team proper backing. These notion seems to be alien to a lot of the Arsenal plastics.

God forbid if this was against 'Chels'! Credit to the Koln fans though. Only 5 arrests out of 20k and very limited damage to property and innocent bystanders despite all day drinking and organisational incompetence by the local authorities. It could have been carnage but it seems they were, on the whole, able to regulate themselves, enjoy the game and create a terrific atmosphere.

While not condoning Flares, that one in the Millenium stadium was a Marine distress flare which was fired across the stadium hitting an elderly man on the the other side. A lot different to the hand held ones.

How did the authorities miss this one? Simply, they are trying to shift the blame. Bottom line is that. Only 5 arrests out of 10,000 is extraordinary. If this had been Feyenoord, Galatasaray, Lazio, etc, well yes, there would have been serious problems!
