Rooney announces his retirement from international football, not a great loss now. Having not been picked for recent matches, he announces his retirement BBC news at 1 report it as a shock......really? His time was up after the last European championship. It's time that move on he's saved face by announcing his retirement thanks for your service to the England national team.

Well thats the last of the golden generation gone without achieving anything of note on the international stage. Shame.

It wasn't a shock. Southgate basically exiled him last year and although recent talk was of him getting called up, I can't see him fitting in with the team structure. His "me" attitude for the last couple of years has ruined my perception of him.
Credit for the goals record, credit for the appearances but one selfish little sod as well.

So he waited to be re-selected before coming out with it?
Says it all.

Not a tremendous loss in my opinion, especially at this stage of his career. 4 goals at Euro 2004 and just 3 in tournament finals (17 games) since. Scored just once at the tournament stage of a World Cup.

We were by far the best bunch of players and supporters in Portugal during the tournament however yet again we failed to get over the line...... It's even harder in the current climate and I don't really see us, England, winning anything soon in senior football even though the success of the under 20's and 21's have done great so little players in history step up to the mark and seem to progress..... Always hope......!

We aren't going to win it but it will be brilliant experience for the players. We need to plan a squad capable of winning the euros in 2020. Look at how Spain won the World Cup and euros.

They were so good that Netherlands tried to kick them off the park.

Some experience but let's use a lot of younger players (U21 and even the top U20's). It looks like a couple of them may even get some games in the Premiership this season

so the Next supposed Great talent turned out to be nothing of the sort on the international stage...as for taking under 21's don't think the powers that be will let that happen somehow. The biggest puzzler is why wembley is filled for all internationals given what's been served up for decades.

If you look at the England squad that Southgate has just named - www.bbc.com/sport/football/41039802 - then let's be honest, it's really hard to see England getting anywhere next summer. There's a bunch of good honest pros in there. Solid premiership footballers. But is there anyone that you would even consider if you were drawing up an all-World squad? Maaaybe Harry Kane, but that's a stretch given the level of competition at his position. What's frustrating about Rooney and the generation of footballers that came just before him is that there genuinely were some World Class talents there. They should have won something.....or at very least gone beyond a quarter final at some point. Now we're left hoping that some of the young, talented players are going to blossom into World Class players. But there's very little hope of achieving anything in the short term. Premier League riches and lack of first team opportunities to blame?

The squad lacks world class players and epitomises the lack of career development for English players in our leagues. We don't know if we have some world class players because so few players get the chance to develop at their parent club. Or are injured a lot.
Alli has a very good chance to become a world class player and is at the right club to do it.

I am not so sure it is the players that are at fault for not fulfilling their potential in this country but more to do with the coaching in this country. Until the FA really invest in getting the best coaches then we will achieve very little.
It's jobs for the boys at the FA. Look at Boothroyd, Simpson and Southgate. I wouldn't put them in the top 10 list of coaches in this country let alone the world.

The FA desperately needs new management, but too many people will lose out in certain areas so they have little incentive to change. Can't be long before Shaun Harvey rocks up there and does something for his ego

Maybe coz it's cheaper than watching prem games, as long as you don't buy fòod and drink in the ground. £20 adult £10 kids is what I paid for qualifiers

Bicester and Junior i take your points but are the majority of England fans not from lower league teams anyway so the prem price scenarion doesn't apply does it?
my main point was that despite constant failure at tournements wembley is still filled come the next qualifiers and even for friendlies...people seem to forget/get over the Euoros debacle with Iceland and all that pretty quickly.

Scored just once at the tournament stage of a World Cup. Interestingly those four goals at Euro 2004 were before he became a Man Utd player. He has scored more goals at major international tournaments for Everton, than he has for Man Utd. For me, Rooney has been a wasted talent since he signed for Man Utd. When he was 18 and playing for Everton, he had the potential to be right up there with Ronaldo and Messi, but where those two pushed on and became all-time greats, Rooney preferred sh@gging grannies and chasing money. Pity really.

That's not fair, he may not of shone like we hoped for England but he scored the majority of his haul when he moved to Manchester United and to say his move to Manchester United was not a success is simply not true.

Ibrahimovich showed him up last season. Older but worked harder and was more influential for the team. The fact Jose dumped Rooney onto the bench as soon as he could says a lot

For a non-Man Utd fan, you seem to be getting quite worked up about this Won the lot? What like the World Cup, or European Championship? I must have missed that one. Bucket loads of goals? He has one World Cup goal. That puts him alongside Emile Heskey, Matthew Upson and Joe Cole.
