Nice goal though, let's hope it's a bit less tedious than the last match.

Not very good from England.
Oxlade-Chamberlain keeps trying stupid passes and can't make any of them, Sterling is running down his usual blind alleys (nice backheel though), both Stones and Jones are not only on the beach, they are so far out to sea they have hired a pedalo.
Despite going a goal down, France look so much better. Quicker, better off the ball and more aggressive with it.

From the little I've seen, England's defending has been utterly appalling. And Sterling's lack of end product is far too evident - better than a couple of year ago but not good enough for a player at his level.

England pass it around very nicely, and slowly, at the back... Against 10 men... Untill they keep losing it.
Pedestrian rubbish on the whole.

Must admit I hadn't heard of half the players out there. The defence was the worst England defence I've seen for some time. The French were good.......but not that good!!

Second half was abysmal. Dier and O-C were shocking and left the defence exposed. Pace was too slow, no pressing against 10 men and cannot keep the ball. We are lucky to be in such a weak World Cup qualifying group othewise we would not make the finals, Maybe the players were exhausted having played non stop since last August but we do not have sufficient quality in key areas. Bring on the U20's.

That is where I reckon we lost the game although as you rightly say, the passing was very poor and we gave away the ball far too much. Also other than Sterling there was no pace?

Defensively awful, we lost against the French 2nd string and they only had 10 men...

No wonder we lost, Egland need an oval ball obviously. Defensively they could do with a Nesta.

France aren't even leading their group at the moment, and could be in serious danger of missing out entirely (i.e. not even finishing 2nd) if they lose their next game against the Dutch. We, on the other hand, will be home free if we beat Slovakia at home in early September. Luck of the draw in a big way.......

World Cup qualifying is still the same number (13; one of which is the host, Russia) as it's ever been. Doesn't go up until the 2026 competition. You need to win your group to be in; if you finish 2nd, it's a playoff (unless you're the 2nd place team with the worst record, in which case you're bang out of luck).

Still not exactly difficult is it! World Cup use to be 24 and is now 32 isn't it? Since 98, I believe. So this'll be the sixth World Cup with 32 teams. However, the four World Cups that were contested with 24 teams had either 13 or 14 UEFA teams playing. The additional spots that have been added since then have gone to increasing the representation from Asia, Africa & the Americas, not Europe. The last World Cup to have less than the 13 European qualification spots that we have today was Argentina 78. And only three World Cups since then (1994, 2010, 2014) have had as few as 13 UEFA spots. Every other World Cup has has more.

I'm not arguing but did you think our last World Cup group was difficult? No - England have been blessed with insane luck in the qualifying draws for the last half dozen international tournaments. There's always a couple of really difficult groups, and we always seem to avoid them, and get the easiest one.....or at least have done since the early 00s. (even 2008, we actually had a pretty mediocre group, and just arsed it up)

They've made things "easier" for the big nations to qualify as they obviously bring more media attention.
