Uninspiring winner in my opinion.
Although, dare I say it a very BBC esq' winner.
Some of the achievements of the likes of Kevin Sinfield, Jess Ennis & Mo Farah eclipse what Murray did this year.
The Davis Cup win, while a great achievement was a team effort and to my memory he didn't win any slams during the season. Underwhelming finish to a great, traditional show.

Even Adam Peaty the swimmer should have been in for a shout, completely dominating international swimming at only 19/20. Most of the viewers are just choosing who they know with their dull opinions

Irritates me when something like this is put up for a public vote when the public genuinely have no idea

What a joke. Chris Froome won the tour for the 2nd time. Fury, while a moron, became undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion. Murray was part of a team that won a tournament.
Another sign how wonderfully staid and middle class the BBC has become. Just glad I stopped watching that utter rot years ago.

Deserved it in 2013 when he won Wimbledon.
But Murray didn't even have a particularly good year this year. Just won us the Davis Cup in a year where his biggest rivals couldn't be bothered.
That he won this year is more an indictment of a pretty poor year for Brits in major sports than anything else

Wrong person, out of that lot I thought either Froome or Farrah, bit miffed no motorcyclists were on the list, Tai Woofenden is a two time speedway world champion, Jonathan Rea is currently the world super bike champion and John McGuiness the fastest man around the Isle of Man, and Danny Kent MotoGP 3 world champion and yet we have someone who swings around a pommel horse, a guy who can swim quick with one stroke and a rugby player nobody has heard of south of Birmingham.
It's ok though, the bbc have less sport next year as they have run out of money, no F1 or golf.

Not convinced the phone system was working correctly for the vote. I tried to vote for Max Whitlock and the response I got was 'Press 1 for Sales', ' Press 2 for customer services'

Pretty good. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-35145243

Murray won by some considerable distance as well. 361,446 votes ahead of Kevin Sinfield (who on earth is he?) who had 278,353. Interestingly in fourth was Tyson Fury with 79,898 votes - only 7,568 behind Jess Ennis-Hill. A bit of voting to try to embarrass the BBC by the looks!
Murray deserved the achievement for the team event but for the main event? No way. Jamie Murray would be a more worthy winner as he delivered in the doubles in most of the rounds and made two Grand Slam doubles finals.
Jess Ennis-Hill is surely deserving of an award by now. Third on three occasions now and she takes on more sports than most of them!

Its probably more a sign of how far boxing has fallen in public recognition that winning the heavyweight championship while being an underdog doesn't win you it anymore, Henry Cooper is a former winner and he was European level at best. If talk of of Joshua doing 350,000 PPV sales for a British title fight is true though will be interesting to see what happens if he wins a title, especially if he beats Fury. Murrays achievement was live on BBC, The Grand slam events are also partly or all on the BBC, I think that plays a big part, the Davis cup was very recent as well. Its harder for those who are mainly on pay TV to get across to the wider audience you need to win this, short of campaigns by groups of supporters like rugby leagues for Sinfield. Ennis would of been my choice, seems to be very hard for a women to win it unless they are royal or win Wimbledon, sign of low profile of women's sports, and the fact that women don't vote in high numbers for this award perhaps. Still one hell of an achievement 11 months after giving birth.

That he won this year is more an indictment of a pretty poor year for Brits in major sports than anything else Apart from a Tour de France win, Mo Farah winning 2 golds AGAIN... We have had success. And Joe Root not even on the list. #1 batsman in the world, Ashes winner, but not even considered.

Is it the driver that is good or the vehicle. Lewis Hamilton is a prime example. Had he still been with McLaren there is no way he would be the 'best' in the world. But there is no doubt that currently Mercedes are the best cars in the world. There are plenty of other drivers (Riccardo, Verstappen) who would give him a run for his money if only they had been driving a works Mercedes. I am tempted to say even I could have won in a Mercedes but that is probably stretching the imagination a tad too far. The same could be said about rider/animal combinations. Charlotte du Jardin - also a world champion - was hardly mentioned, but is it her that is good or her horse Allegro. AP McCoy got it right when he thanked the 18,000 horses who helped him become champion jockey so consistently. Incidentally - I had not heard of any of the motor cyclists you mentioned and I have an interest in most sports.

A big old joke, even today.
With the BBC shedding sport like crazy, I can see Murray winning again next year as it will be the only sport the BBC shows live outside of patronising people with the FA Cup!

Why is it 'personality' of the year?
|
|
|
Post by Gary Baldi on Dec 21, 2015 13:56:12 GMT
I don't know. Not many winners have much of a personality. Especially today, most are about as bland as a bland can be. Safety first from the BBC. They may as well call it the BBC acceptable to middle class people and those who spend their life offended by anything sports personality of the year award. Bit wordy though
As it is, its turned into a big joke, and a complete waste of money. Which the BBC does not have. Remove that and remove the BBC Music awards and get back to proper programming rather than creating lots cooking shows, antiques shows and reality TV that are repeated ad nauseum

I'd have liked to see Poole Speedway nominated for the team award having just won the Elite League 3 years in a row but it was obvious the winners would be the Davis Cup team, would have been interesting if the Women had won the World Cup☺️

Sports Personality of the year? The British Sports Personality of the Year? And it gets given to someone who doesn't identify himself as British and who has no personality.
2013 I agree with Tony, it was fully deserved. But this year he hasn't won a single Grand Slam and he is most definately not best in the World.
Kevin Sinfield? Who's he? I've just had a look on Wikipedia and he became the all-time leading point scorer in Super League. Woopy-do! But has he done anything impressive in the Rugby League World Cup though? Naaah, they just get their arses kicked by the Southern hemisphere sides just like their Union counterparts.
Ennis-Hill, Farah, Hamilton, Fury, Rutherford, Peaty, Armistead and Whitlock all won World titles, and Chris Froome won the most prestigious race in cycling for a second time. The mind boggles how the public came up with this one.

But then that's like saying if Messi or Ronaldo were playing for Tamworth Town, they wouldn't win the Ballon D'or. You have to earn the right to compete for the very best teams, and you also have to beat the other guy as well who is drving a similar car (Nico Rosberg). And Mercedes aren't going to pick any old Tom, Dick and Harry to drive for them. Just like Barcelona and Real Madrid, they only want the very best drivers driving for them and will pay top dollar to get them.

The BBC hypes sports personality of the year much more than when it had actual sport to show, makes you wonder if when it is left with nothing the show will be spread over the year.
Its impossible to compare peoples achievements in different sports fairly thats why the personality bit of the name is probably kept, its a get out.
The contest will probably last as long as the BBC remains a huge broadcasting giant, how long that remains is questionable.

I used to watch it all the time when it was in that little theatre in the round place back in the 80s and 90s. Now the ceremony is just your everyday pumped-up "event" with zero personality, ironically.
Didn't we once try to get Malcolm Shotton as the SPOTY after he became manager? Was one of the earliest online/fanzine campaigns IIRC...

I wonder why the BBC are getting rid of F1, yet keeping Casualty, Citizen Khan, Mrs Brown's Boys, Still Open All Hours, Doctors, Dragons' Den, Flog it, The Great Pottery Throwdown, Holby City, BBC Alba, BBC Asian Network, Chris Evans' massively inflated wage, BBC News 24, and worst of all: Sports Personality of the Year. Despite enjoying a few sports, I have no idea why people watch or vote on that garbage.
Maybe when the BBC start providing a good service again, I will start paying my licence fee. But for now I will cruelly steal Luther and Radio 2's Pick of the Pops with Tony Blackburn, mwahahahaha.

The problem is the BBCs ego. It simply cannot cope with losing channels or stations, so is willing to cut its own nose off and reduce its schedule to some awful programming to get around it. It needs to get back to two TV channels and three or four radio stations, and then concentrate on raising its standards. Does it need 2 talk radio stations? Does it need 4 music stations?
SPOTY is a joke now. PR'd up sports people at a bland event, voted on by the few people that can actually be bothered to watch it.

Chris Froome should have won the award, in my opinion. In fact, I'm amazed he didn't. How many days does the Tour De Sweat Your Balls Off last?. I watched most of it and I'm not even a cycling fan. But was I proud for him! And he was spat on by the scum on the roadside! Apparently, they said he must be on drugs, to be that good! Since he wasn't on drugs, I can only assume that he IS that bluddy good!
