Not 'ITK' -Never have been, but intuition and a beer belly gut feeling tells me you will all be drooling like a Bloodhound sometime soon.

Its just a hunch based on no inside info but if the club are going to pay a premier league coach I suspect they will give him some players to train.....

Not 'ITK' -Never have been, but intuition and a beer belly gut feeling tells me you will all be drooling like a Bloodhound sometime soon. Very hard to know what a 'full squad' would look like without knowing whether Callum, Josh Ruffels, Matt Beavans and possibly Josh Ashby are going to contribute heavily this season. If they play 20 games each (and by play, I mean play well), then together with 15 senior players (current 12 plus 3 new ones) we'd have 19 first team pros, with development squad guys coming in behind. This is hardly a lavish squad, but it may be do-able, if we don't get too many injuries. Personally, my main concern is not so much numbers, but goals. Williams and Kitson, between them, contributed 33 goals and assists last season (from memory). Are we realistically going to find two players as classy providers as that in these two weeks? Add in a second and third striker who can score 15 goals each, plus a goalscoring midfielder who can replicate the 5 goals scored by Hall/Wroe, plus a winger who can replace Rigg's average of 4/5 over the last 2 years - that's a heck of a lot of goals. And bringing in goals is very expensive. One final point: there's talk about a whole recruitment department - ie a Championship-level scouting operation. Now far be it from me to tell football people how to do their jobs, but generally speaking managers at this level know the relatively small pool of players they are looking at inside out. If you asked Chris Wilder what he would do with an extra 250 k, he'd tell you off the top of his head. Likewise Westley, Steve Evans and (in fact) Gary Waddock (when I spoke to him in May he already had his full shopping list to hand) No amount of spending on scouting is going to alter the relatively small number of players who can reliably score 15-20 goals a season in League 2 (the odd exception like Tom Pope apart). Or the number of wingers quick enough to go past their man. The trick, at this level, is to find the right mix of average players, and then motivate them. I went to a bunch of away games last season, and heard the din coming from the home changing rooms of the top dogs in the league - Guardiola this division ain't! My concern is that Mapp (who I am basically positive about) thinks that he can make the difference by making average journeymen into better players. Looks lovely on paper, but confronted by Westley's hoodlums, or a corrugated sandpit at Newport, these theories have a nasty habit of coming unstuck. We need goals, we need nous and we need pace. At the moment (and this is hardly Mapp's fault) we are badly short of all three. I'm sure that all concerned are very much aware of this.

And the points you make over 'Westley's hoodlums' and a 'Corrugated sandpit' at Newport bring home some uncomfortable truths! I guess we will all have to wait and see (And maybe pray a little too!) that the new management, scouting and coaching team have the Nous for what is required in terms of recruitment, motivation and being able to adapt to varying conditions at some of the more 'Interesting' places the Basement Division has to offer. Agree we need players of the calibre of (A more mobile!) Kitson, and a 'Wing wizard' such as Williams, not at all an easy task- especially at this late stage, but fingers crossed. One thing's for sure, I'm feeling a whole lot more optimistic than a few short weeks ago.
