[Feel free to contribute]
I happen to think the England performance was decent for much of the match with some very encouraging signs. A draw would have been a fair result but in Pirlo, Italy have a master in midfield and we gave him too much freedom (again).
Some big decisions for Roy to make for Thursday's match vs Uruguay. Uruguay without Suarez look ordinary. Lugano at the back is weak and they look an ageing outfit.
Where is Rooney's best position in the World Cup? No goals in 9 WC matches but he is a class act. Does a disappointing Baines keep his place? Does Lallana come in?

He will probably keep the same team - whether he should or not is another matter but he will not be brave enough to drop Rooney. Far more questionable last night was bringing Wilshere on - what was the point of that ? Massively overrated and added nothing.

England will learn a lot from that performance. It will teach the young side that playing well and creating chances doesn't win you games, as it is the converting them that counts, and to never switch off in international football. I think the Rooney and Baines problems can be solved in one. Next game Rooney should play in the number 10 role, with Welbeck on the left and Sterling on the right but with both given a free role. Welbeck, for England, doesn't give up on anything and will cover Baines, and will also allow him more freedom on the attack. On 55 minutes we should replace either Welbeck of Sterling with Lallana (Sterling if we're winning, Welbeck if we're not), and on 70 should replace Rooney with Barkley. If we're not winning on 80 minutes Henderson should be replaced with Lambert (Lambert and Sturridge up top, with Sterling, Barkley and Lallana behind them), and if we are take Sturridge off and replace him with Milner (Lallana up top, Welbeck and Barkley behind with 3 holding of Milner, Gerrard and Henderson).

Play Milner on the left to add balance and make it more solid. Put Rooney in the 10 role. One out of Welbeck or Stirling. Other coming off the bench later on.
Also Ashley Cole is missed. He's the best English left back we have.

He's the best English left back we have. Milner shouldn't even be there front three of Wellbeck, Sturridge and Sterling. Rooney to start on the bench Berkley. Gerrard and Henderson C/B Cahill and Jagielka. But the full backs we have serious problems with, Yes e should have taken Ashley Cole.

We don't have a problem at left back, Italy were allowed too much space down their right due to Rooney and laterly (the 2nd goal) welbeck not tracking back Rooney has never done it in an England shirt when it matters and should not be near the squad.

I've never seen a team give the opposition so much time and space on the ball in there own half. They were just standing there watching allowing them to put balls into the box. In every game so far you have seen every country closing down and hurrying the opposition, but not us. That side of the game was cringey to watch, but we did look good going forward which was a plus.

Time after time they attacked our left side and we did nothing to counter it. Someone on the pitch should have taken command and tried to minimise the threat on that flank but instead we allowed them time and space out there every time they had the ball. If we had cut that out midway through the first half when it first became apparent then we might not have lost.

Wellbeck was on the left and not helping Baines out one bit when the Italians attacked again down that side for their second.

We are what we thought we were after that performance. A dangerous side going forwards - but weak in defense and particularly in the defensive side of midfield play. Touch and Go as to whether we get out of the group. Uruguay are clearly no great shakes, but maybe Costa Rica will cause us some problems......
Still, better than the turgid football that Capello put us through four years ago.

Rooney's new position should be left back. Left back in the dressing room. A team player does his job. Constable did that for us last season. Rooney didn't.

Still, better than the turgid football that Capello put us through four years ago. Uruguay certainly seem to have aged alarmingly over the last 2 years. Much, much better England team than I've seen for years.
