We defended well until the last five minutes. Everything was in front of us before and while they had plenty of possession we looked comfortable but they started to get in behind just before the break. Going forward we've done alright too with Sterling and Welbeck both causing problems. Gerrard and Rooney though have been disappointing. Impressed with that right back for Italy and while Pirlo is a class act if he's kept deep by us he's only got the one trick with that long ball junto Balotelli because ihe doesn't go beyond his comfort zone.

It's a matter of metres with Rooney. If he just shaded more to the touchline, it would stop the easy ball that Italy have.

Rooney showed what he can do with the goal but he's lacking discipline and needs to play for the team instead of sulking. Playing him through the middle could make things easier but otherwise he needs to make way for someone who will do the hard work too like Lallana.

Baines has to do better there. Nothing like tight enough to stop the cross. He's had a poor game so far. Left for dead in the first half by that run from their right back.

Baines has struggled. Rooney's nonchalance in front of him hasn't helped him.

England's approach is good, but the application just shows the limitations to some of the players there.
When the pressure should have been increased, we started to struggle. Good play gives way to panicky shots, sliced crosses and running into dead ends (I'm looking at you, Wilshere).
A disappointing night, yet still some belief that we might have enough tools to get ourselves out of the group.

You could see the Italians giving Johnson space, drawing the other England players into passing to him, and knowing that he wouldn't make good use of it.

I think Paul Scholes was right, Rooney is burnt out and there is a huge question mark over his international future. A great cross aside he was less than ordinary and a goalless campaign would be unforgivable.
It's hard to see what he offers the team any more other than goals against weak teams in qualifying. I'd personally drop him for the next game and put my faith in those who give everything without fear.

Good performance, we simply weren't goo enough and got undone by one cross and one corner. Poorest player Rooney, apart from cross for the goal, failed to track back and offered little else.

As usual England cant perform Hope this will be the last competition we see Johnson Right back has become a nightmarish position for England. Johnson is best of a bad bunch really. I don't want to see Walker there nor Jones who isn't a specialised right back. Down the left, Shaw looks the number one prospect for LB once Baines gives way, so no complaints there. Here's hoping for a young English right back from somewhere as it looks like a really troublesome position.

Hodgson can't understand why people are frustrated with Rooney, but on that performance you see why. For a player on world class money, his performance just isn't on it. He's not hungry enough anymore. He coasts through games when he isn't the focal point. Johnson is a terrible RB as well.
That performance was miles ahead of the last WC in SA. It lacked end product, but Italy were not comfortable. Nice to see Italy won their final judging by the celebrating.

We will learn from this. Quite juvenile for the goals, we will get it right soon. Our attack play was brilliant until we ran out of steam. I didn't agree with the substitutions though (the entire point of Rickie Lambert being in the squad is that situation) and still think our fullbacks aren't up to scratch, although Baines was good in patches but Johnson wasn't on it. Henderson and Gerrard did their jobs, Sterling was brilliant and Sturridge finished his chance. If we can fix our faults before the Uruguay game we can still have a good World Cup.

Fucks sake Bazzer, stop the negativity, we switched off for a second and it cost us big time, we could and should have had at least a point, the amount of shots we had, we needed a couple more on target COME ON ENGLAND next time out

Agree Sterling looks hell of a prospect, a Michael Owen in midfield. Our best player.

We've gone a young squad and, although the result wasn't right, the approach was far better than I have seen England play in ages. For large stretches, England outplayed Italy and for a few naive decisions here and there we could have walked out of there with a point or better. We all know the limitations of the squad (Johnson, Baines, Rooney not turning up - I'd love to see Lambert get a run out to act as a means of getting Sterling involved), but moaning about us losing doesn't covers up what was a good performance with a novel approach. I like what Hodgson is trying to build with the England team. We don't have a perfect XI where every cog is as good as the next one to create a well-oiled machine like Spain from a few years ago. To think it was shit though shows you're not thinking stoically. Good performance, irritating result. Anyone else staying up for the Japan vs Ivory Coast game?

Good performance, irritating result. Anyone else staying up for the Japan vs Ivory Coast game? No I didn't think it was sh*t just saying what I saw and felt, Raheem superb. Why was Wellbeck taken off he tracked back superbly Rooney should have been replaced by Berkley earlier. the full backs wre pretty poor Johnson especially, There 2nd goal was a big defensive error. but in most parts we did play pretty well shame about our finishing.

One man escaping a lot of flak is Gerrard. That was a hopeless performance from him pretty much from start to finish. I'd drop Rooney like I said earlier but does Hodgson have the balls to drop Gerrard because he contributes virtually nothing anymore. What does he do ? Pirlo, who I assume he was marshalling, would have had less space in the middle of a desert, Gerrard is dining out on what he could contribute years ago - which admittedly was immense - but he's so limited nowadays.

That's a fair comment baldy but he did put some superb cross field passes together.
