This match came towards the end of our unstoppable run to promotion at the end of the 95/96 season. Fresh from beating then-leaders Blackpool at home, and with a large following making the short trip, we demolished Wycombe in front of their own supporters with goals from David Rush, Stuart Massey and Paul Moody, the final goal being celebrated by almost breaking Wycombe's crossbar!

18 matches into our first season in the Conference and still unbeaten, having just beaten our title rivals Dagenham & Redbridge away in the preceding qualifying round, optimism was high going into this match. However, despite compteing on an equal footing with the higher league opposition for much of the match, it just wasn't to be as, with Duffy and Burgess missing, we failed to create the chances that could have won the match. Having gone behind, we scored a late equaliser from a Gavin Johnson free kick, however we were still celebrating when Wycombe went straight up the other end and finished off our FA Cup campaign for that season. Still, at least Mooney didn't score.

The 2300 Oxford fans who made the short trip to Wycombe for this 'local derby' left this match wondering how neither side were able to score. It was a very competitive match and while Wycombe just shaded the first half Oxford dominated the second, though both sides had chances to score throughout. It was a tough test so early in the season, with Wycombe being tipped for promotion, but we proved we were capable of mixing it back in the Football League. However, we suffered a few scares in front of goal with Wycombe coming close numerous times in the first half and they missed one glorious opportunity in the second half after a defensive mixup created a one on one situation with the ball eventually floating harmlessly over. We also had our chances, with one Matt Green strike clattering off the bar having beaten the keeper though he was equal to shots from Green and Constable, both of which seemed destined for the net. Despite being unlucky to come away with just a point from this match it left us still chasing our first win back in the Football League.
