Anyone know why we have to be GB and can't be England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland? Well it all comes down to who gets recognised as a National Olympic Committee. According to wiki - at the moment, there's 204. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Olympic_Committee192 of the 193 member states of the United Nations (only one missing is South Sudan as they haven't got their act together yet) Plus 12 others: Taiwan Palestine American Samoa Guam Puerto Rico US Virgin Islands Bermuda British Virgin Islands Cayman Islands Aruba Hong Kong Cook Islands I guess if the four home nations wanted independent teams, they could form independent Olympic Committees and then apply for recognition. But then there's a lot of places (including Catalonia) that have formed an Olympic Committee and the IOC haven't recognised them. Imagine they haven't yet paid the bribes......

...but if I am going top moan about anything its the BBC website. Trying to find out results is shocking. Everybody I work with is moaning about it. The official olympics site isnt much better. The nbc site is probably the best site for getting information quickly and easily... www.nbcolympics.com

It's great if you're accessing it via Smartphone, but on a PC it's a lot worse than it was.

im going for A with a bit of B
i always wondered about why its GB and not Wales/Scotland/England, i always thought it was because the funding comes from the same place, so run by 1 Association. that was my guess anyway.
slight (only slightly) off topic, why does Ireland/N.Ireland have 1 Rugby team but 2 teams for everything else???

anyone who is anti olympics is anti everything and may as well jump off the nearest building. Then I had better get ready to jump. As far as I am concerned this is basically a London thing and it bores me to tears.

Torch bearers.......
Among the many heroes taking part were those who displayed unimaginable bravery.......amongst those, there was the paratrooper who lost his legs, had brain damage....and then the young lass who took the torch to Downing Street - awarded the Military Cross for extreme bravery when saving a colleague in Afghanistan. Without question when handed the torch, they exhibited humility that was there for all to see and made you proud to be British.
And then there is that embarrassing pratt Sir Bruce Forthythe who used the occasion to promote himself, go into stupid poses and tell us how he has recently played to big audiences etc etc.......when is this fool going to realise that the olympics are bigger than him and imho he brings embarrassment to all the other well deserving souls who played their part with much dignity in keeping with the true Olympic tradition.

I was vaguely embarrassed by some of the 'celebrities' who carried the torch. Bruce Forsyth (as Bob says), Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley from Absolutely Fabulous (was old hat 10 years ago), Will I Am - not even British. But I thought that the torch relay was actually pretty good - very inclusive, locally and nationally deserving torch bearers, if you wanted to see it you probably could.
As for the actual sport part - I'll be interested in some bits, not in others. Like everybody else. But I'm looking forward to the new L2 football season far more than the Olympics if I'm honest.

Don't understand that argument Yes its basically a London thing and why not? that is our capital city... But the torch has been literally everywhere and plenty of events are outside of London Can kind of see the argument if you live in Scotland, you're a long way from it all, but anywhere else...not really. Not many of us are genuinely out of reach of a day trip into London.

Just go to this page: www.london2012.com/schedule-and-results/Then click on the day/sport and it takes you to the appropriate results page pretty sharpish. Certainly it had all the Archery scores up there by 11am this morning! (including the blind South Korean setting a World Record)

Buzzing for tonight and the whole event.
A lot of questions can be asked over the costs but the fact is, we have it on our door step and I intend to embrace it.
Going to be immense.
The question is - how to watch everything with the 24 channels now on sky just showing Olympic coverage! Recording clashes will be a nightmare. i just hope the misses realizes I am cancelling her usual crap that she has series linked. she can watch all that upstairs!

Its only because we have such a huge influence on the world of football that we're allowed to bend the rules. We are England in Rugby, Cricket (technically England and Wales) and Hockey as well, not just Football... Not quite true about cricket, technically its a GB team thats called England,if you are born in Scotland you are eligible to play for England. Mike Denness was a Scotsman who captained England. In fact with the number of South Africans and an Irishman who played for Ireland in the team,i think it could be a world 11.

If I had gone to the trouble of buying a ticket (and that just seemed such a lottery and too much hassle) then I would be more excited about the games. I expect I will be watching some of the more popular events on the telly though, but being the 'home' games, I think the pressure might adversely affect GBR. I predict GBR will end up 5th in the medals table.

I would suggest that the reasons we have Irish and Scottish players is because they aren't at full Test-Status.

I think its time to ignore the whingers. Let them try desperately to ignore it, while the rest of us enjoy one of the greatest moments in our country's history tonight. Buzzing doesn't even begin to describe how I am feeling right now...this is immense and a once in a lifetime thing, something to tell the grandchildren about.

I am looking forward to it, but have to be honest and say I would feel the same level of anticipation were it held anywhere in the world. I will enjoy some events more than others, but if there is British interest in the latter stages of any event I will watch and scream at the TV. I have not really enjoyed the build up as a succession of celebrities have jumped on the bandwagon and a succession of lawyers have earned fortunes watching out for bakers icing cakes with 5 rings on it. I just want to watch the actual sport and cannot wait for the action to start and the emphasis is placed on the athletes.

B for me, not a very good start showing the South Korean flag instead of North in last nights ladies football match. I thought it was a great start. Winding up those disgraceful Commie bastards was just what was needed.
