A less than perfect GoT is still better than anything else. We'll miss it when it's gone. And despite all my complaints this week......I totally agree......

I agree with most of the sentiments in the thread.
The timescales in this episode were the worst yet - was a little ridiculous. I am looking forward to seeing how the books manage this - we should find out next year I would guess. Surely - Winds of Winter cannot be later than next year.
However, moving on aside from this - really enjoyed the episode still and the series is moving on at a good pace. As was mentioned - the show will be sorely missed next year.

It feels like they know what they want to do next season, and have had to fit in all the other stuff into this season that has less episodes. It's a shame. Even another episode next season would help. The nature of the content means they had a lot of loose ends to tie up, but I do wonder if it was worth it. Why not just forget about Dorne like they have Esaos, etc and simply this season a touch? Thing is, they've had plenty of opportunities to simplify the story, and wrap up loose ends by simply killing characters off - which, let's be honest, has been the Game of Thrones way - but for whatever reason they've chosen not to do so this year. Bronn, Davos, Tormund, Jorah, Beric, The Hound, Gendry......all of them are (probably) tangential to the overall narrative; all are taking up increasingly precious screen time; any or all of them could have been given a glorious send off in the last few weeks - but instead they've all been reprieved, presumably because people like them and want to see them complete some personal journey/have a happy ending during the final season. Prior to this season, the show didn't care for such things. Didn't care if a character was popular or had wrapped up their arc. It was usually 'Character makes stupid decision - Bam! Dead'. It was sometimes shocking, usually unpredictable and always compelling. And I feel like the show is losing that just as it enters the final lap. But maybe the showrunners will totally redeem themselves in Episode 7! At this point, though, I think it would have to be one of Dany/Jon/Cersei/Jamie/Tyrion/Sansa/Arya/Bran for it to really hit hard. They picked on the easy targets earlier on in the season and have left it since. I suspect Gendry was a hubris moment because the story didn't end and fans have nagged = GRRM would have been more cut throat in that regard. I sometimes wonder if it's just to jerk around the fan base around so they assume the Jon's or Cersei's of the series will always survive before they get mass culled - like the Tyrell's and other in the Sept of Baelor. Let's see what happens when the big meet from the trailer happens. Can't see all coming out of that in one piece.

The ironic thing with the pacing was it took ages to walk to arrowhead mountain, but not long to get back. I just hope they did all the quick travel to make it something we ultimately forget about when the next season is released next year if they can keep the sphere of story smaller.

A good episode with a Dragon Ex Machina ending. Who needs magic horns that get blown to bring the wall down when you have dragon with holes in its wings ice it down.
R+L=J is finally out there at last - the worst kept GoT secret and Jon is gonna get his Aunt pregnant so both women leaders will be pregnant with incest babies. Yay for incest!
Sad to see Littlefinger go because he's a shit stirrer, but right for the story. Let's see how Cersei gets on with her foreign army. Can't but think she will get double crossed by Euron.

I am assuming with the episode On Demand and being a Bank Holiday - that most would have seen or if not, shouldn't be clicking on this tread! Do not read below if you haven't....
Personally, also enjoyed the episode. Looking forward to watching it again tomorrow but think you have summed it up well.
It is all set up nicely for the last season (did I hear it will be September 18....eeek, long wait).
An interesting one at this time is Cersai. With Jamie making the decision to leave her and head North she is now alone with very limited guidance. She could asily be led to making some very bad decisions! Also, have to assume Jamie will tell the others about Cersai's planned deceit which will unite them further and it does seem the final battle (assuming the Good Wins out with the North and White Walkers eventually).....of course, it is Thrones....so I could be over simplifying this
Loved the Starks kids exacting revenge - was actually a little more brutal than I envisaged.
I imagine episode 1 will see a mighty summit ay Winterfell and by then - Walkers will be through the wall and I would guess things will look very bleak. I think Danny will lose all 3 dragons eventually and that will be the price to pay for her and Jon's baby.

The Lone Wolf dies, the pack survives basically means that a Starkgaryen Fantastic Four (+ maybe Dany) is being formed for the next season. Talk is the next season may drop in 2019, so a long old wait. I hope they get away from this seasons everywhere timeline and get a more focused season now the main protagonists will be nearer each other.
I did wonder if Jaime would throw away his golden hand at the end, signifying his departure from Kings Landing. I do wonder what Tyrion and Cersei talked about, and if Bran finds out about the screw job.

Any ideas how long it would take the White walkers to get to Winterfell? Or is it also magically a 12 day walk. Was it Winterfell in the background of that shot at the end when they're all walking through? If so that's not 12 days even at undead pace.

Its a longish walk as they'll have to pivot right to get to Winterfell. In the books. Was probably Kings Landing in the background on the episode yesterday!!
