and Dementia.
After Alan Shearer documentary.
The investigation, jointly funded by players union the PFA, follows a Mirror campaign that revealed three 1966 World Cup winners – Nobby Stiles, Martin Peters and Ray Wilson – have dementia.
At least 375 other footballers have been diagnosed and the condition has killed legends such as Jimmy Hill, Jeff Astle and Nat Lofthouse.
Not before time, and some time in the future a ban on heading the ball by children of certain age groups might be extended to the senior game? Or could there be some sort of protective head wear?

Modern footballs today are lighter than the old rain soaked leather balls.
However a review is long over due, I wouldn't be at all surprised if there is a link.
Heading is a fundamental part of the game of football and a great skill to those who do it well, I can't see a ban in the near to medium future, maybe some sort of head protection, but suspect we're some way off from that.

I used to go to a pub frequented by Jeff Astle in his later days and it was sad to see what had happened to him.
I'd hope that the modern ball means that heading the ball is no longer a danger, but it's definitely overdue an investigation.

I have said a few times on here that heading will be banned at some point but got ridiculed by various people.
It will happen

If they allow boxing/combat sports then it would be strange to ban heading a football, but I suppose it's a litigious thing, FIFA/ the FA/Clubs won't want the lawsuits coming there way, if it comes to that.
Be a shitter game without it, added in to the increasing moves to ban any physical contact, would just finish off the transition to Netball played with your feet.

Boxing got rid of head guards due to the fact it encouraged the boxer to punch their appointant harder as the head guard protected them yet it was proven wearing a head guard led to more chance of concussion. Sports will evolve and change if science proves it can cause long term health health issues. Heading even a new lighter football directly from a goal kick can be a hell of an impact to a player.

That is not the reason that amateur boxing (the pros never wore them) got rid of head guards, people in a fight didn't need any more encouragement to hit each other harder. They got rid of head guards as wearing them was proved to cause the head to rock back harder causing more trauma to the brain than not wearing one. If you ban heading in football then that must be the end of a lot sports, Rugby has potential for far worse head injuries with every tackle, getting a knee in the head from an 18 stone powerhouse in full flight makes heading a ball seem like nothing.

Good point about boxing, actually proved to do more damage if anything. I think it will come down to risk assessment on a personal preference. Every sport has risk from injury either in the present or in the future. The new balls are a lot softer then they used to be and in general football styles have evolved in a way that heading will not be as prominent when training kids as it may of been.

This is all about litigation! Everything is dangerous if you want it to be. More people die in road accidents but nobody is trying to ban cars. I have sympathy with any family who lose a loved one but stop trying to make everyone immortal and an excuse for death happening. It is the ONLY guarantee in life. My Nan died from Dementia - she never played football. My Uncle died of lung cancer but never smoked. Stop looking for blame all the time. Drives me insane - excuse the pun.
