Could well be his last chance with us to 'make it' and sounds like Pep is giving him the opportunity. Good luck to the lad and hope he becomes a success with his home club. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41665536

Hope it works out for him. Can’t see him being the striker that we are playing though. Maybe in Henry’s position

I really hope that he comes back strong as he started fantastically.
His loans have hardly been successful though and I fear that if he can't show some form this season (which could well need a loan move as some of the OUFC players start getting back to fitness), he will have to start a fair way lower down the pyramid.
Matty Taylor is always an example of what can happen in those cases although I would suspect that Taylor was incredibly driven and determined.

He would probably be a great striker if he was a bit heavier, a bit to light weight for our striker position, would get bullied in 90 minutes, Look at Gino upfront on his own he must be atleast a stone or 2 heavier and he gets bullied by the centre backs when he plays upfront. Maybe if he tones himself up he could reignite the promise he could have a chance. Nice to see his commitment to the club though and he still wants to be here, there's got to be something he can do to find his form.
Simon Eastwood should be his inspiration if he wants to play at this club, have the same determination and work ethic as him when he had to drop down to get game time and he'll be a great player.

I watched the players warming up before the Charlton game and saw the strikers warming up with various shooting practices. The most effective by far was Roberts. He hit the target continually and scored far more from various angles than any other of our strikers. Let's hope that he's on his way back!

Started off well when first broke into team, then got bad hamstring injury, to be honest think he should have left a couple of seasons ago, not league 1 level in my opinion

Never underestimate the personal issues he has had. What he and his family have been through will have made it very difficult for him to focus on anything. He's got something about him. In his five minutes on Saturday, the shot from 35 yards was wasteful, but he was trying to impress. The feint and turn before the shot was good. Don't write him off just yet. Pep wouldn't be putting him on the bench if he thought he had no chance.

The fact that he's still at the club shows he has something about him. In the summer we were ruthless with the young players in terms of letting them go if we didn't think they were good enough. Roberts stayed though, and it has to be because he still has something about him. I hope he can fulfil his potential, but at this moment in time it's a big if.

Lets hop he can make an impression this season and it sounds like he is getting every encouragement to do so. He is out of contract at the end of the season I believe.

To lose a brother in a tragic accident at such a young age must have devistating for the lad. Also he will have seen the affect it has had on other members of his family. Not an easy thing to deal with.
It appears the club has been patient & understanding and James now has a chance to move forward with his career, probably needs to drop down a division or two, so unlikely to be with Oxford at League 1 level but I wish him well for the future.
However wouldn't it be great if he came off the bench to score the winner on Saturday.

As Obika / Van Kessell get fit and if Mehmeti was also fit then I am not sure that we will be seeing that much more of JR. I wish Roberts the best of luck and really hopes that he fulfills his potential but reckon that his chance at Oxford has been due to injuries. I reckon that he will maybe go out in loan in January. Regardless let's hope he starts scoring wherever he is playing.

I think every genuine Oxford Utd supporter would love to see him do well. A doubter is someone who is a bit sceptical and questions things and it would be ridiculous not to do so given JRs career to date and the obstacles he has been faced with. Does anyone seriously think it is 100% guaranteed that he'll make it big at OUFC, or anywhere else. He showed real class with his goal at Plymouth and at Grimsby but that was a while ago. His loan spells were not unresounding successes. He looked fine to me in those few minutes at Rovers last week. Fingers crossed for the lad.

A loan in the Conference won't do him much good as he needs a higher standard for me.

Ruffles is Premier league to Roberts Hellenic league 4. Now Thomas, Obika are fit and Van Kessels and Mehmetti are back in a week or so, the writing will be in the wall for roberts departure. He couldn't sustain a loan spell at Oxford City, but would do well in the Southern league, his level.

Jack Payne plays behind the striker so his size doesn't matter as much, When your upfront on your own you need to be able to hold the ball up, now if Roberts backs into a defender to hold him off he has no chance, He has the running side of the game he could do that very well, but upfront on his own he is not strong enough, he won't be able to effectively hold of the defender when he needs to.

Not on the bench today. Anyone know why? Because against Bristol Obika wasn't fit and against Charlton Rothwell was suspended and today they were both available, meaning he wasn't needed to make up the numbers.

Playing at home we don’t need two centre backs (Martin & Williamson) and a full back on the bench and only one natural striker (Obika). With ten minutes to go Henry was feeling the effects of 3 tough matches in a week and Roberts could have made a difference.

Because JR isn't good enough - the football we are playing now is worlds apart from when he broke into the team. If Pep didn’t think he was good enough he would not have put him on the bench last week and would probably have let him go out on loan. The last ten minutes of any match are very different in that players are tired the play is stretched. Whilst Roberts may not be good enough to start he could have an impact in the latter stages.

Irrespective of the is he good/strong enough arguments anything can happen last 10 mins and Roberts does have a habit of getting on the end of a chance.

Not on the bench today. Anyone know why? Obika is back, Thomas is fit, Mehmetti not far away, Van Kessel a week away, making roberts 5th choice. He will be off in January. He was on the bench making up the numbers. He is miles away from being good enough for the squad. His level is 4 leagues below, as his loan patterns have shown in recent seasons, being unable to hold down a place long term of Oxford City. He isn't 18 he is 22 and needs to find his way in the world, not kid himself he has a future at club that has moved on massively since he came through the ranks.
