No doubt at all that Joey would have played for England had his applicatiom matched his ability. Most outstanding natural talent I have ever seen play for OUFC. If he had knuckled down at West Ham he would have got 30-40 caps. We had no left wingers at the time (Steve Guppy got a cap!!) and Joey was just so good.

If Joey had a stronger mentality that had allowed him to fully move on and knuckle down at a bigger club he would've played for England. Honestly, younger fans will only know the name and the stories, but he was THAT good. Comfortably so. His delivery was first class, sure, but some of his strikes were from another planet. And those runs... he turned people inside out in a way you hardly ever saw, or see today. I have never seen anybody twist and dart from one direction to the other so quickly and dangerously. His ability to change direction was otherworldly, probably bettered only by Ryan Giggs, and even then Joey was not a million miles behind him. England struggled for a genuine left winger for so long and he was right there, he just didn't have it in him to move away and really knuckle down away from the pubs. If he'd gone to West Ham, stayed there, got his head down and got his physical condition up to speed etc, he'd have been bought by a genuinely top club and been called up within 18 months. I'm convinced of it. Quite simply a beautiful player who will surely always hold a place in our All Time XI. This ^^ He was other worldly. I enjoyed his time on the right wing too where he cut in and would shoot. So one footed but it didn't matter. He will forever be the most exciting footballer I've watched and loved simultaneously. Only player I saw destroy a team in similar fashion at the manor was kinkladze

I remember the game - that Kinkladze performance was one of the best I have ever seen against Oxford. He dominated the game with pure skill and vision and didn't even look like he raised a sweat. Brilliant.
Oh, can only agree with all of the comments regarding both Joey and Elliott - Joey at his best was singularly the most exiting U's player I've seen and Elliott was truly something else. Dominant in the air, compensated for his lack of pace by reading the game and could hit a fabulous cross field pass, on top of his ability to chip in with goals. Anyone remember the goal at Carlisle? I've embellished that goal so much that I now swear he was in another county when he hit it!

Some great posts on here that conjure up great memories.
Listening to the game tonight it's struck me how history repeats itself. For Jemson read Maguire. How did we lose both to Bury with all due respect..?

Was that Mark Angel setting up the 5th? Lovely bit of wing play that. This was one of my happiest memories of that era......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiRX3gOefpM First time I saw us beat the scum. Joey scoring against them soon after he left them to come back to Oxford. And check out the run from Moods to set up that goal....

At 11 years old I didn't expect to go so long without tasting any sort of success after that team of 95/96!
I guess that's the driver behind a lot of the panic on here after the last three games. After so many years of losing and poor football (minus the start of the Wilder era) we finally seemed to have a team in the bracket of the 95/96 group. That momentum seems to be evaporating and everyone's fearful of what might come next...

Don't recall him starting much once Massey and Beauchamp had nailed down their places.

Back to Jemmo. Interesting player. You couldn't call him a 'fans' favourite' in the traditional sense - he just didn't court that kind of affection. I kind of liked that about him. Didn't seem to mix with the other players in the Social Club after games either - would usually be seen off talking to his missus at a separate table. But a really good player for us, at least in his first spell (not sure what went wrong the second time). Always amazed me how many headed goals he scored, considering he wasn't that tall a player. I guess that in his favour he was fairly 'robust', and could therefore stand his ground under challenge, and of course he had Joey putting inch perfect crosses onto his head from any angle as well. I bet he got some stick from Cloughie, back in the day.
Back to Joey. I'm firmly of the opinion that he could have played for England. Possibly lacked the outright pace that some wingers possess, but otherwise had it all. I reckon in all my time watching the Us, the most enjoyment was gained when Joey had the ball at his feet.
