It depends on which reports you read. BBC 'Fighting has broken out in away end at the Emirates Stadium' 'Koln fans fighting with stewards inside Emirates stadium. Group arrived in home end and fought their way into away section ' 'Police now in attendance with dogs. Further group fought their way in before they arrived' And a few other s Says more about this shitty country and its complete lack of organisation and competence. How did the authorities miss this one? Simply, they are trying to shift the blame. Bottom line is that. Only 5 arrests out of 10,000 is extraordinary. If this had been Feyenoord, Galatasaray, Lazio, etc, well yes, there would have been serious problems! Yep, I'm inclined to applaud the Koln fans. 15/20,000 of them but more colour than trouble, according to most reports, and in any group that size you can expect some arrests. Obviously the FA needs to look at touting of tickets and how flares were smuggled into the ground in such numbers. EDIT - Don't like the 'shitty country' reference, by the way.

Well cologne achieved what Hitler didn't, a German army marching through the middle of London unapposed. Not true, several Gooners fans were seen shaking their heads and muttering

Last one to perish was back in '93: www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-35402735 . Considering how few flares are lit in UK stadia in general, I guess statistically these can be considered highly dangerous? While not condoning Flares, that one in the Millenium stadium was a Marine distress flare which was fired across the stadium hitting an elderly man on the the other side. A lot different to the hand held ones. Also, the flares in the picture of the Köln fans are entirely different to what the youth at OUFC seem to get their hands on. I wasn't at the OUFC games in question, but I'm assuming the goods were those yellow smoke bombs like the one that closed down the Globe before the Barnsley game? If so then these, last seen drifting across no-mans-land at the Somme, are absolutely awful and absolutely unpleasant. Not all flares, smoke bombs are created equal (not that this excuses from the fundamental fact that pyro is banned in all forms in this country and this should be followed). But if this is the ONLY time people have experienced pyro, then it's unsurprising the venom against them. It's like tasting the drip tray of a pub and saying all beer is awful. What it and this thread do show, and I'll repeat myself here, is that ultra culture is stillborn in this country. For everyone who finds they enrich the atmosphere there is another one who thinks they are super dangerous. And never the twain shall meet.

The authorities, after Bradford, are very, very specific on the issue, so any opinion on good, bad, ok, don't care is moot - it's illegal and has been for many, many years. Having experienced smoke bombs in Germany, it can be fun but the stench was not pleasant.

You heard tutting? Bit of a big game atmosphere for the Emirates then

Berliner is correct the stuff I have seen used (smoke) by the fans recently (who are not Oxford Ultras) is cheap smoke. It is possible to purchase flares/pyro etc. from European ultra websites which is far superior and the same as that used on the continent. Also the difference is that a lot of groups use flares and strobes/fire crackers. The smoke being used at the moment I am sure is just paintballing sort of stuff. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hJCbFSrmzU VAK410 in 2014 is a good one without really any smoke. Obviously one that springs to mind was the FC Koln smoke against Bayern (I think) that got the game stopped. I wouldn't do it at on Oxford game or in the UK while it is band but like standing/not standing at matches I think some day it needs to be reviewed before grounds are filled with versions of Charlie quaffing pinot noir.

Haven't you been following the Brexit debacle. Or been to Heathrow. Or use the rail network? I'll admit that football clubs, steawarding, etc are better organised than most other aspects of British society, but this was a wider failing of police, information, etc. Basically the 20,000 Germans had to do their own self-policing. Good job they were German and not Italian eh?
