If we get two million with add ons we should take it, personally think he is quite overrated and inconsistent, however on his day he's a very good player.

A bid of 1 million is way short of his current and potential worth to OUFC.
A minimum of 2 million with huge add-ons, Johnson still has a lot of potential.
However would much prefer him to stay, stop sulking, and start showing what we know he's capable of.

I thought the reason we were looking at foreign players was because English players cost too much, but most people on this forum want 2 mill for a player who apparently isn't that good consistently enough to be worth it. Obviously faz was right.

Comedy post. ''Possibly the worst left back i've seen in 10 years'. Where's your memory man? Brevett, Johnson, Burgess (!)? Newey, Jeannin, Kinniburgh.., the list goes on and on and on. Johnson played ok at Oldham just last Saturday. Mind you he had Williamson alongside him. If you can't see he's the most exciting player we've had in years I actually feel sorry for you. I think you're confused as to what the job of a left-back is. That is to defend. The players you mention, by and large, knew roughly how to defend. Some better than others. Newey, for example, was solid defender. Passing? Not so much? Getting forward? Not so much. This isn't a debate about whether Johnson is exciting or not.

He's only 4 years younger. And has done about the same but in a league lower. We also apparently don't need to sell and have him on a long deal. £2m is bang on for me

They're taking the p*ss if £1m is genuinely the offer. Oxford should start negotiations at £3.5m plus sell on etc with the intent to get £2.75m plus sell on etc as a minimum.

Either way it's not really up to us if he wants to go then we need to let him go and get the best price a sulking depreciating asset is no good for Oxford and his interest and performance levels have been poor rercently. A season of this and I don't think he weill be worth much at all.
Plus he really isn't a left baack and is the worst oxford left backs since we have been in the league. He was helped massively by Dunkley last season who is obviously a better player than Martin. He this through a very dencent footballer with a decent delivery, so I really don't think we (Pep and App) help playing him deliberately out of position, and they are doing the club a disservice doing this reducing the value of a key asset and making an employee do a job he is not capable of which isn't fair on the employee too.

I seem to be the only one who thinks a million for Johnson would be great. I personally don't think he's worth any more than 500k and I certainly don't think he can cut it at a championship club looking for promotion.
So a million would be a great bit of business, anything more would be phenomenal and could be used to really strengthen the squad to achieve something.

No offence meant, but If you think £1m is good business thank god you do not have any influence at the club. Johnson is still young. Is a tricky winger and has bags of pace. Naturally left footed. In my opinion he is worth £4m minimum & 30% sell on fee. Especially with the market as it is. No reason we should get mugged off just because we are a league one club at the moment. I don't think eales will allow that either as he will want as much as he can get for Johnson.

Don't think we can lose here. We either get a fantastic fee or we don't have to sell him. If it comes to a point where he handed in a transfer request then we can give him a go at right back Part of the deal of giving these players a platform to jump up the league's is making sure we get the return. I don't see him throwing a hissy fit though. All he needs to keep doing his get his head down and perform. If he does that the right fee will come for us and he will get his move.

Johnson is over rated, a million would be great but because of the unwarranted hype that surrounds Johnson it seems Eales may be able to get more than Johnson is actually worth.

Detached from reality? Have you seen the figures that are being thrown around? Why would we sell a player we bought for 600k for £1m it is not worth it. Johnson is all of the above I mentioned. He's also English so there is a premium on that as well. It's the way football is going and just because we are a league 1 side we should ask for less? Not at all. He's worth as much as roofe was when we sold him. If you can't see that then I think it's you that doesn't understand football and is detached from the reality of football at the moment.

If you look at it, young English players are going for massive amounts of money, Johnson is a quality player whichever way you look at it and we would want more than we got for roofe. DE knows this, hence why he put out the statement he did where he said it would need to be an 'unbelievable offer out of the capabilities of championship sides' he's one of our key players when played on the left wing. You don't sell your best players for less than they are worth. Respect your opinion as well though.

£4 million!! Not a chance, i think anything over £1.5m and i would snap their hands off. Roofe had an impact in the big games and scored a lot of goals to go with it, it may have been a division lower but he was far more consistant and a bigger influence on the side. Johnson is not consistant enough, we can all see the potential - however i do start to wonder if that potential will be fulfilled or he will stay a mecurial winger who produces moments but not consistantly.
Edit: maybe snap hand off a bit strong, but certainly consider. I guess it comes down to how much you value potential vs ability right now. 4 million for a league 1 winger i would want a proven player performing week in week out at that level, dont think Johnson has done that.

He is worth as much as the market is prepared to pay. If 1 million is the best offer then that is all he is worth today. He may improve he may not. I certainly wouldn't pay more than 1 million for him because he hasn't shown the consistency required for a bigger price tag.

Roofe scored over 20 goals and had the highest combined goals and assists total in all 4 leagues, add to that the fact he is younger than Johnson. Johnson showed a couple of glimpses of ability last season, that doesn't make a team want to spend 4 million on him. He had just as many mediocre games as he did great games whereas I could could the amount of mediocre games Roofe had in a 50+ game season on one hand.

Might be tempted to take them to be fair! Could turn out to be a bargain! It's only my opinion that he is worth that, obviously the club agree as otherwise the reported £1mil would of been accepted already. We paid 650k for him at the end of the day plus say 20% sell on to Motherwell so we aren't going to sell for anything under £3m anyway. You must see that? Otherwise it's awful business practice.

Not saying he is worth £4m, but does he have a year more still on his contract than Roofe did? I think if Johnson was played consistently as a wide left forward, not mostly a left back (difficult to score 20 goals from that position), or a centre forward (where Appleton bizarrely played him at the end of last season), then he would produce more consistent, threatening performances. I think he is definitely worth getting on for £2m, possibly a bit more, in today's market.

I wouldn't bother with a sell-on fee for a player that is nearly 27. Surely it would make more sense to optimise the transfer fee.
