From Eales interview it sounds like this week they are going to try and tie a few players down with new contracts, Lunny being one of those. If he won't sign a new deal then we will sell him and it will be for more the 500K.
If I was Lunny I would do at least one more year as a captain of a side going for promotion in league 1. That will give him more of a chance to move to a bigger club next summer than Sheffield United.

We've got a contractor at work who comes from Leicester, keen supporter follows them all round Europe etc. Anyway he seems to think a deal for Johnson is pretty close according to chatter up there.

If I were MApp I would say sign Marv and Curtis now, loan them back to Oxford and they will be worth £3m each next year. Maybe all part of the MApp deal? He injects £2m transfer fees in and we keep them for a year and DE uses it for a big push for promotion with some massive late signings/Leicester forwards? If we do go up it will increase his value in the club massively. We could be about to have a game changing year. We have momentum and so are worth a punt and incoming fees like that are the financial arm he maybe needs. So let me get this right, Leicester pay £2 million for Johnson and Nelson. Leicester loan them back for a season to Oxford. The price of the 2 players rises to £3 million EACH in just 1 season,an increase in value of £4 MILLION pounds. Hmm. If we get promoted then we wont have a player on our books not "worth" best part of a million (who is good enough to take with us to championship). If Roofe went for 3m we would easily get that for each of them if they shine again and key to getting us promoted but can we afford to gamble and not sell now at risk of getting nothing later? We clearly need a cash injection to give us top 6 budget and the resources to challenge - the other side of the coin is not to sell anyone... but I dont want to think about what happens if we fall just short again. We have to accept that our model relies on prime assets being sold for relative peanuts but as long as we got those assets for free, or really cheaply, the model is sustainable.

I'm going to weigh in here... I think Lunny should leave, if we get good money for him.
Anyone can see he's a wonderful passer of the ball. That was enough for L2 and even the lower reaches of L1. He can clearly do a job for us. But I don't think he's good enough for the Championship/promotion chasing L1. Why?
- The key issue is mobility. He is just SO slow. Defensively he is a liability - he can only play if someone like Ledson cleans up. The LS/JL partnership was ended by MApp because he saw that we were leaking goals through the middle of the pitch, against good teams who broke quickly. Useless in the air doesn't help either. - Lack of pace in an attacking sense - the other issue is when JL has the ball if he is closed down, he can't evade the pressure. He doesn't have a trick, he has no pace. Compare and contrast to Rothwell - he welcomes pressure as he backs himself to beat the man, which ultimately creates more space for himself. - Other teams have figuring him out - the notes on Lunny are all the same - will hurt you if given space, when closed down, totally ineffective. Because of his defensive limitations, his only role is playmaker. If he can't do that, he's a passenger. - Has one role - which is static, long ball playmaker, which is very good at, I'll admit. But positionally he's most comfortable receiving a few yards from the back 4, which isn't that helpful is you need penetration. I'd want my main playmaker to be able to do what Lunny does, but also run at people too.
Ultimately, it's about a step up in class. We need a championship level playmaker at the heart of our team. I don't think Lunny is, or could ever be, that.

I do have this latent resentment, though, that these "big" teams can nick players off lower league teams for ridiculously little money.

I think he will simply be a weapon in their arsenal, as opposed to their primary playmaker. Sides with bigger budgets can collect decent players who do different things. I'd want Lunny against teams that drop deep, where he is given time - of which there will be a few. He'd be of little use against teams that press hard (which I think we will be under Pep). Or perhaps Wilder thinks he can deploy him differently to us - maybe as a quarterback. Or perhaps he has two rapid forwards who he wants to play on the shoulder. But your point has merit. I don't know why Shef Utd think he'll do well in the Championship, where players get even less time and space. That's why I'd be happy to sell.

What I took from the article were the following 3 things.
1) Though he's told Pep "there’s absolutely no need to sell any players", Darryl's "tried to be as transparent and brutal with him as [he] can be about where the issues are."
"We were fortunate last summer...that we sold Callum and Kemar."
I take this to mean that to continue as we are, for at least another season, then we can get by without selling, but if we want to progress (whether to have more funds to spend this season, or to add to the kitty for next term) then he will have to sell.
2) These will be an important couple of weeks of negotiation, not just with players but with other clubs wanting to sign our lads:
"The reality is that because of the way football deals are done, half the cashflow from those deals is due in July.
"That more or less pays for this season, so the club is in fantastic shape financially."
I read these statements as essentially saying that if we are selling a player, even if the final sale of the player happens further on down the transfer window, this week will be crucial in negotiating figures so that we get half the cashflow in July and have money to spend on our own transfers.
3) In regards to players leaving the club, Darryl wants business to be done early or not at all. If, by the end of this period no deals have been struck with other clubs, then he doesn't see anyone leaving, as he feels it would be too disruptive to the squad to sell a player late on in the transfer window (something he alluded to last year):
"If we get past a certain point, I’d like to think that we’d keep everyone"

How many times did he get out jumped or loose his man for crosses meaning dunkley had to try and bail him out. For me Rothwell is more creative and with more potential. If sheffield united want him and they can match our valuation then his loss would be not too bad. He really isn't championship quality game in game out anyway.

The issue is, if we lose both Maguire and Lunny, the only creativity we have left in the team is Henry. So investment will need to be made in replacing that creativity, and like for like could cost more than whatever Sheff U have offered for Lundstram.
Eales knows his stuff though, Im sure this wont have escaped him.

The only thing I would say to combat those saying he is not championship standard is that he is still young and developing. He isn't suddenly going to be blessed with extreme pace, but that aside he can improve in most areas that have been identified as weaknesses. He is, by all accounts, very vested in the structure and ethos that we operate in and so there are other benefits in having him in the squad/team All that said, If someone wants to pay big money for him then we should do that business if he is unwilling to sign a new contract.

I don't think Lunny is, or could ever be, that. I have to say this did become apparent when we moved into L1. Teams press him hard and he has nowhere to go. Too often last season he was pressed wide and turned and hit cross field without looking, giving away the ball in dangerous positions. He has some great qualities but I think you need to set up a team around him to get the most out of him. I am not wishing him away but if he does go then Nelson takes the armband, Rothwell looks in great form and we dip into the transfer market.

I think he improved on that in the second half of the season, he definitely did find the added pressure from opposition midfielders a problem though, i'd hope he's still here for next season but if he does go I don't think it's the end of the world, as long as we get a good fee

I'm a massive fan of Lunny but I think I'd rather he went than either Nelson or Ledson. Nelson would be a much better inspiration as captain IMO and Ledson could pretty much play with any of the other midfielders.
It might even give Xemi or Rothwell a chance to shine.
Having said that I'd be ecstatic if he did sign a new deal (if only to get his true value from any future sale)

Don't really get all this criticism of lundstram. Yes, he had an indifferent start to last season, but he is always the one player demanding the ball and never hiding. His work rate is also second to none. Rothwell does have great potential to do a similar role, but he goes missing for long periods of games. For me he's our key man. MAPP knew this as well and made him captain. If he does go, I'd want at least £1.5m, with sell-ons.

To be clear - I like Lunny. I like his attitude, I think he grew into last season, he's always hunting for the ball. It's just a matter of where we are now vs. where we were a year ago. That Barnet clip is a good example - they were crap and Lunny had a field day. We don't play that kind of crap anymore.
If he stays, I'm sure he'll add to our promotion push, but I just don't think he can primary playmaker anymore, and if we get offered a wad of cash for him, I think he should go.
As rightly pointed out here - Nelson and Ledson are far more integral to who we are as a team.
EDIT - A 3 man midfield would certainly benefit Lunny. I'd like to see it in action...
