I think Andy Linighan, Chris Whyte, Pat Hoban, and Pal Lundin possibly played in Europe too, does Grobelaar count even if he never played for us?

I was under the impression that Obika was one of their better players, didn't he cost £200,000 a couple of years ago? Surely if MAPP was still here we'd be happy with this signing? Obika has two UEFA Cup appearances. Wonder how many Oxford players have been able to say that the've played in European competitions? Welcome Jon. No need to rub it in, f*cking Liverpool!

Happy with Obika coming in. Looks like his best years might still be to come.
I dont want to sound negative because there is a positive spin to come out of this, but i think its fair to say. Looking at our current strikers: Hemmings, Thomas and Obika (and Roberts for sure), all have a lot to prove. None of them, for whatever reason (injury, goals, formation, team), IMHO, had a good season last year. So at least we will have players, all trying to prove a point and doing their upmost to be the/a main man. Its surely a very healthy scenario in terms of competing for a starting place in the team?. I see it as a very level playing field at the moment in terms of each of their capabilities so will be interesting to see who Pep decides to go with first off.
Happy enough with the current strike force as it is tbh and i think we would hold our own in this league as it stands in terms of our striking capabilities, but of course if someone else comes in then that will add a little more spice to the pot.
Reasons to be optimistic surely?...

1) Signed by previous manager (essentially) shortly before being replaced. 2) Didn't have much of an impressive reputation before joining the club. 3) Seen as a ridiculous signing by many of us and mocked regularly at the start of the season. 4) Finished his 1st season at the club as top scorer. 5) Fan's player of the season 2 years running. 6) Ended up firing us to promotion in his 2nd season.
Sound familiar?
Come on Jon, you've essentially ticked the first 3...
Suuuuper, super Jon Suuuuper, super Jon Suuuuper, super Jon Super Jon Obika!

Chef will be disappointed.. I will not moderate my feelings for a pimply commis who thinks he's all that because he spent a few months under Marcus Wareing and churns out the dishes at East Oxford's premier pre-match buffet. It's not easy, roader, when everybody looks up to you because of your good looks, erudition and insight (not to mention wedge), roader. Some days I wake up and I just do not want to be the next Charlie Methven. I feel your pain on this issue, it's a tough gig but someone has to oblige. Heavens forbid waking up next to methven. (there you go you made me say his name )

There are real signs of quality within that video. Power, first touch, finishing all great. But with a poor strike rate, you can't rely on a video of best bits, and need to see what he's doing the rest of those matches... What we need at the moment is depth. I'm sure there will be another striker of quality coming in before the start of the season. As an option, I'm happy we can mould him into a better force than he was at Swindon.

What with one goal every 3 games? He had a poor season in a terrible Shit Town team. But look at his scoring record. Is that so poor?

Will be a good signing I think. Certainly an improvement on Hemmings and Thomas, who were not good enough last season. Swindon season ticket holder I work with, always said he was a very good player. Said he works hard, holds it up well and has a very good touch. But then as soon as it was announced the other day, he started banging on about his injuries.
A lot of his goals in the videos are very good finishes, he makes them look a lot easier than they are. He looks direct, strong and quick.
He also won a player of the year award both his seasons at the scum. So they couldn't have thought that poorly of him!!

Reasons to be optimistic surely?... There's a lot to be excited about with obika, his best years in front of him, and Thomas if he keeps fit. Roberts is not part of the picture, could make a mark at conference level, so never going to cut in in a division 1 side with a top 6 budget, also has a poor attitude, so nowhere near the picture. Pep must be looking for another attacking option amongst the remaining 5 players he needs to bring in. Exciting season ahead though if all this comes together.

Shame for Roberts, he would have been fine if it had been a top 7 budget. He did try really hard, but attitude let him down, and ability/skill level also, as his many loan spells showed, otherwise who knows how far he would have gone.

Then if there are injuries there will be loanees to cover them. That would leave the squad smaller than last season, when Appleton knew it should have been increased in January, as eales had originally stated on Radio Oxford, personally.
We start friendlies with 4 players injured already, so 5 new division 1 standard players is the minimum we need to be competitive, challenging for promotion, with a squad capable of it. Not a Division 1 squad of around 20, with youth squeezed in, with them then being shipped out to conference south sides, leaving us in a worse position than last year.
"But the game comes too soon for centre back Aaron Martin, who is in the final stages of his recovery from a serious Achilles injury.
Midfielder Josh Ashby (knee) and goalkeeper Manny Agboola (finger) will also miss out, while Sam Long is a doubt"
With a promotion pushing budget promised those numbers wont be a problem. The money from Appleton's compensation, Sercombe's transfer money and the money from last seasons cup runs, eales can have no excuse for keeping to his plans to increase the budget, and therefore squad size.
Just because Appleton has gone, there is no excuse for eales to allow us to go backwards, only build on last years successes.

Big Guy, strong and quick over 10, puts himself about ..... you don't need tippy-tappy footballers to get out of this dreadful league its about 90% effort and 10 % skill ... someone who is happy to take one or two for the team, roll up their sleeves and mix it up a bit....... he fits the bill for me.

I've heard a few people say that Thomas is very highly thought of within the club. If he's fit (big if), I think he'll play a big part this season. Interesting. His injury record and the player I saw (except for Bolton away!) leads me to think otherwise. Here is hoping you are right! Glad he’s proving me right thus far (touch wood on the injury front).
