Good interview but no photo holding shirt or scarf. Not even wearing a club tie. Something doesn't add up... What reason was given as to why the press conference came 5 days after he was announced as manager? Why does it matter so much?

What reason was given as to why the press conference came 5 days after he was announced as manager? Maybe it was that he was so keen to get involved on the training ground and start assessment of the players then looking at signing some real quality. After all that's what's really important right now. The press can wait!

Why would there need to be a reason? It is surely deeply concerning to both of us that we are in entire agreement over the collective nervous breakdown that is being suffered by a bunch of posters on this board. The smallest thing is being parsed for every potentially disastrous meaning, leaving aside all manner of far more likely interpretations. Why wasn't the press conference until today? Well, I don't know (and don't much care) but presumably having got the job in a pretty hasty manner he needed to sort out things with his family, find somewhere to live, deal with holidays that he might have taken but now won't be taking, finalise contractual detail. Why wasn't Darryl there? Busy; abroad on business; doesn't want to steal Pep's thunder by having to face questions about other club stuff. Whatever. FWIW I've only see one quote from Pep, and that is that he won't be rushed into signing players just for the sake of it. Well, good. A player is not just for July and August - you're then stuck with him and his contract for two years. Yes we are at a disadvantage, we all know that. But there is no reason to compound that situation by making another mistake. Everyone needs to calm down, accept our situation for what it is and let events take their course (as regards to the playing situation). None of us will know anywhere near enough until the autumn to make judgements on any of this stuff. Before I get a chorus of "You're trying to brush things under the carpet", no, I am not. I'm simply saying that there isn't anything TO brush under the carpet. There are, as I have said elsewhere, looming strategic issues for the club. The stadium situation; relatedly, the business model; the mess over the training ground/ academy/ woman's set up.

Oh great! Now the lounge has to accomodate the bloody press as well. Never get near the milk now. And no chance of a biscuit. That's it! All out. You loungers could moan for England! We'd be only too happy to accommodate the press in the SSL and educate them with our pearls of wisdom.

It's amazing how many people see asking a question as a veiled criticism, or a 'nervous breakdown.'
Again, it's out of the ordinary that no board member was present today. There will be a reason for it, likely innocent and/or positive, but to mention it is not looking for 'disastrous meaning.'

Good interview but no photo holding shirt or scarf. Not even wearing a club tie. Something doesn't add up... What reason was given as to why the press conference came 5 days after he was announced as manager? Jerome Sale said on Saturday that he would be in Spain for a couple of days which probably explains why he first met the players on Monday afternoon. So perhaps he and/or the board wanted him to have time to bed in for a full day ahead of meeting the press.

What reason was given as to why the press conference came 5 days after he was announced as manager? Why on earth would they waste people's time on explaining why there was a very small delay in having a press release (when in reality nothing much was likely to be said). It sound like he was out of the Country until Monday lunchtime and has probably prioritised meeting the players/ other staff and having a training session or two ahead of having the press conference. I just don't understand why this is even being mentioned. It just seems such a non issue.

The people that have these overreactions are the ones that the media pick up on which just adds fuel to the fire and forms opinions in those that probably would not be bothered otherwise. e.g people going mad because Teresa May wasnt immediately out hugging victims at Grenfell. Well she had a major crisis to sort out and i'd rather she got on with that (and running the country) than be taking photo opportunities to boost her profile (corbyn)

The problem is that the hysterical constant public questioning of every little thing makes the whole atmosphere more febrile (ha!) and doesn't create an environment for success. And, even worse, as with the political situation you mentioned it pushes down the agenda the serious structural questions that are really important. We lost our manager 2 or 3 weeks ago. We already have a new one, who is assessing the squad and will have the bulk of pre-season to start getting his ideas into the players' heads (many managers take over mid-season in a fire-fighting situation). Is it ideal? No - ideally it would all have happened 2 or 3 weeks earlier. But given the situation as it was, this is surely a 'par for the course', rather ordinary outcome. Whatever Pep says today is largely irrelevant. He is an intelligent man and will say "all the right things". The question, as with all managers, is whether he's the right man at the right time; whether he'll be able to motivate the current players to play to the best of their ability (something that MApp largely achieved); whether the systems he puts in place will work, or whether (like MApp's old Plan A 4-2-3-1) it takes him a while to adapt to what is needed; whether he forms the singing from the same hymn sheet relationship that MApp had with the recruitment team. These are all interesting questions, but they won't be answered for months.

Playing down expectations. We'll have signed 5 players by Friday. I dunno, I am not certain Pep realised how much he has just upset Bazzer, he might not make Friday. I would hope it doesn't take him long to realise we need a left back though, that would be a bit worrying considering we don't have a senior one at the moment.

I remember when u were hysterically questioning if mapp was the right man for the job, publicly stating that playing nice attacking football wasn't what was needed to get us out of l2, and that the club and fans needed to wake up as relegation was looming. Yet a little over a year later we were playing some of the best football in the league, which did get us out of it, and the DNA which U were openly stating wasn't suitable for football outside of the championship is now the preferred model not only for us to continue, but also others to copy. It's nice to have you back Charles, telling us all how we should support the team, but we're all aware that while we don't know everything about the game we can still make our own judgements. Even il didn't listen to u on stadium matters, and he employed u as an advisor 😉. Some fans worry about little things. Some fans worry about the big things. Some worry if oxvox have even approached the landowner at water eaton. Some like Darryl, some have been concerned about how things have gone off the field. At the end of the day we all want what's best for oufc, just have different ways of showing it Most of this is fair enough, but to say that I was hysterically calling for MApp's head is just plain untrue. In fact, along with you I was one of the few who said he should stay!! I was extremely concerned - as was MApp himself (since confirmed in interview) and members of the Board - that our playing form was so bad that we were in danger of relegation. That is not hysterical - that is a normal reaction to being in 18th place (from memory) at a time of year (midwinter) when these things usually started to get sorted out. MApp changed his system, went more direct, and then brought in Baldock and Roofe - two Championship-level performers - and Skarz. Fantastic. Wasn't that great - it meant that we ended up mid-table, rather than a few places lower. But as late as March we were only 1 or 2 defeats away from being in serious manure. The crucial game was, I think, Morecambe away when Roofey sorted it out with a run and cross with the outside of his right boot that was the single top moment of quality that the Kassam Stadium had seen at that point! Even Hoban couldn't miss scoring as it basically hit him and went in!! As for wondering if OxVox have ever approached landowners at Water Eaton, how can one be worried about something one knows for a fact has never happened?! But my overall point, I think, stands. Which is that I believe it would be better for all of us if we gently disentangle ourselves from the hectic 'debates' of the last few weeks and normalise back into a more humdrum, grounded discussion on the playing side. Given that MApp's snidey comments about budget, and his evident dissatisfaction, were the foundation of some of all this frantic worry, perhaps it will be better to have a manager who is (presumably) happy with what he is got and is raring to go, rather than someone who has one foot in the exit door and is communicating to players that he might not be around much longer.

Sorry - Morecambe at home I meant. And actually it may have been Mansfield, come to think of it. Or another club beginning with M. Or a club not beginning with M.

I've interpreted this post as Charlie knowing something. What's he hiding. You're trying to deflect attention onto Charlie with your post ! I think you have inside information about the impending closure of OUFC!

Agreed. Think that will just naturally happen as the season kicks off, Close season is always the form of minor panic in some areas be that have we signed anyone yet, to how poor someone plays in a pre season game. Fans will generally all get back behind the team once there is something to support. This season has been exaggerated by having mixed messages from the club, an owner that wasn't sure if he wanted to sell or stay, and the loss of the best manager we have had in ages. On top of ongoing issues over stadium and training ground and staff.
I have a feeling there may be one more slight meltdown yet, before things start to pick up. If Maguire signs elsewhere. But we have a lot to look forward to. What will peps style be, will he use Johno as a winger. Is he a go for the kill or protect what we have type of manager. Will there be enough coffee in the lounges, or will those bastards in the directors box have used all the milk again.
Good times

I've assumed Maguire will go elsewhere this year, but that's life. I'm sure he fancies another crack at the Championship and with 18 months of playing well at OUFC, will get that opportunity.

You would have thought at least one of the board members would have been in attendance though.
