Died aged just 73. Never saw him play but bought my paper off him every day for a couple of years in the early 80s. R.I.P.

R.I.P a great servant to OUFC. On his day a very classy inside forward or number 10 in today's money.

Only managed to see him play a few matches for us, a true 'Legend' for Oxford Utd so this is very sad news. RIP and condolences to his family.

Graham used to be a customer of mine, back in the late seventies/early eighties, and as well as being a bloody good footballer, was a really nice man. Modest, affable, always prepared to chat.
I hope the club do something to commemorate his life and mark his passing.
RIP Graham.

Great player. If we could have combined his brother's brute strength with Graham's silky skills Lionel Messi would have looked a right amateur.
Great memories. Sad to see he's gone.

Could some of the old-timers who watched Graham Atkinson play tell us a little more about him?
Like his style of play - was he pacy & athletic, tricky & skillful or big & tough? Was he a poacher in the box or a creator who scored goals from everywhere? Right foot/Left foot/Mostly with his head?
I think most of us know the facts about his goalscoring feats and his place in OUFC history, but I for one would love to know a little more about how he played.
On days like today, reminiscing often seems the best way for a board like Yellows Forum to pay our respects......

As I recall Graham Atkinson was in the mould of the skilful and tricky type of player, not the most pacy of players but a genuine goal scorer. Right footed if I remember correctly.

On days like today, reminiscing often seems the best way for a board like Yellows Forum to pay our respects...... Well he certainly wasn't pacy and he wasn't a 'centre forward'. He was a deep-lying right-sided inside forward, almost a midfielder, he wore the No 8 shirt for many years. Many of his goals came from great positioning, running in to the box and firing in a loose ball, not unlike how Sercs plays these days. Also, although one-paced and a smoker he did maintain that pace and his positioning throughout the 90 minutes. Can't recall him scoring many with his head. I think the best game I ever saw him play when I was in the left side London Road was towards the end of his career in the 2-5 cup defeat to Man City in '74. They had their full first team out (no weakened teams in cup matches in those days) full of internationals like Summmerbee, Bell, Law etc and GA was the best player on the pitch. He scored the first goal and carved out a great chance to level at 3-3 but couldn't quite finish it off, he gave their centre halves a torrid time that day.
