Hi all
I've been following Chelsea since 1977(although my eldest brother followed the U's home & away for around 25 years,a book in itself)
Before my time but a favourite past player of mine was the late Peter Houseman, the recent anniversary of his passing was remembered on various Chelsea forums & Facebook pages which was touching.
Over the last few months i've been doing some research into his life & career both at Chelsea & Oxford & was wondering if anyone had anything to offer.
I was informed he was laid to rest in Cirencester & a few years ago along with an Oxford friend we went to pay our respects, however the weather that day wasnt its best & we had to give up.
Many thanks in advance for any memories or info that can be provided
Wishing you the best for the remainder of the season
Best wishes
Jim

I remember everyone getting excited about Peter Housemans arrival at the club. He joined Oxford in 1975 and he actually played against Chelsea in the old second division, a 1-1 draw at the Manor if I remember correctly. Peter died less than two years after signing when he was involved in a car crash between Oxford and Eynsham on his way back from a charity night. Still fondly remembered here.

He played in both games that season against Chelsea A few years ago one of his sons posted on a Chelsea forum asking for memories of his dad...it was very moving to read from an older generation of Chelsea fans. His last game was at home to Crystal Palace..my eldest brother was there..i still have the programme somewhere. Cheers Jim

Maybe I was a bit starstruck in those days as a 9/10 year old but I still see him as maybe the best player I ever saw play for Oxford. Passing ability was special

I was there for his last game. Pouring with rain against Palace. He was a super player- far too good for the level we were at in those days. But more importantly by all accounts a very nice bloke- all very sad. The children were very young at the time, and both he and his wife were killed (along with two of their friends, I think).

What happened to Him was absolutely tragic. He had two children i believe and often wondered who looked after them

There's a newspaper article that I'm struggling to get a link to. Peter, his wife and two others were killed by a 22 year old son of a former MP doing between 90 and 100 miles an hour in his sports car. His barrister said it was the concussion not drink that caused the symptoms that made him look considerably intoxicated. If I remember rightly the bloke did not say sorry or show any remorse.

That makes shocking reading. It is also a clear example of the class system being used to the offender's distinct advantage. He should have done time for that, and if it were today he would have done.
RIP Peter Houseman, who was a true gent and classy footballer, and the other three victims.

The sort of article you read and feel your blood pressure rising all the time. Peter Houseman set up the football club in Oakley and there is a local youth league named in his honour. My son played in it for a couple of years for his team. He was a top class winger in his day in a classy Chelsea side and we were fortunate that he opted to play for us.

I remember vividly waking up to the terrible news, to this day I still feel sickened and very sad. Reading the newspaper report supplied here only increases the pain. A massive loss. A travesty of justice.

I'm not sure the two cases are comparable.
But to stick to the Peter Houseman case (as that's what the thread is about, and I don't think we should allow Ched Evans to derail it) it really was an unbelievable tragedy and miscarriage of justice, even more so when it's revisited all these years later. I wonder what kind of privileged life the driver went on to lead while two sets of kids were orphaned?
On a side note, he was an Oxford player, not Chelsea, but that indiscretion pales into insignificance compared to the tragedy that occurred that night.

Remember it so well one of my favourite players-only just learnt to drive myself and took the car out that day to expunge any phobias - six children orphaned by this maniac who prob. should have been banned from driving for life IMO.

I remember him playing for us against Chelsea at the manor. We drew 1-1 Chelsea probably had about 6000 in a 11000 crowd!

Im pleased to report that Peter Houseman's lads got a very warm reception by both sets of fans last night All the best Jim Thanks for letting us know, 40 years later and thinking about Peter Houseman's passing still saddens me. That shows what an impact it had on us Oxford fans of a certain age. The link below has some of his Chelsea goals. He scored one goal at the Manor, in a 3 - 1 victory against Gillingham in December 1976. My memory of it - which therefore could be completely wrong - is of PH cutting into the box from the right wing at the London Road end and hitting the ball very firmly across the goalkeeper into the net. A goal of quality from a player of great quality. www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2017/03/hollins-remembers-houseman.htmlRIP Peter Houseman. Perhaps something will be mentioned by the club at the Bolton game next Tuesday?
