We need a new keeper. Slocombe and Buchel are average, but we should be demanding more than just that. I've not felt confident with any keeper for much of the past 2 seasons.

Whatever average may be, I think you're wrong, GB. OK, Buchel may have had a relatively short career thus far, but both their careers would suggest that they are, in fact, significantly above average.

Both cannot kick past the halfway line, both struggle with crosses and general control of the box. They are good shot stoppers, but overall can be vastly improved upon. Only when a very good keeper comes in will a lot of fans realise how inconsistent our previous keepers have been.

Why are so many pointing a finger at the keepers, yet no-one blames the goal-keeping coach?
If both keepers have 'under-performed this season, isn't the coach also under performing?

I've been to around 40 games this season and must admit I haven't noticed that. On the other hand, given the wind tunnel that is the Kasstad on most match days, it's, perhaps, hardly surprising during home games. And where is this keeper who will have total command of his box, so that we need never fear another cross, miraculously going to appear from? Is the scouting system that delivered Slocombe and Buchel this season suddenly going to move up several notches? There may, of course, be better keepers available during the close season, but whether a single one of them will be willing and able to come to Oxford is another matter altogether.

Why do we need a keeper who can kick over the half way line, when we distribute to full backs. And when we do go long lose it, as neither hylton or roofe can play with their back to goal to hold it up

I only noticed the kicking when someone like Barry Roche was here and he cleared the balls over the half way line with ease. It's been the same since Clarke to be fair so is nothing new. It means on the those horrible windy days, we are hemmed in because the keeper cannot clear his lines. But we should hope that they can find one! Trevor Carson wants to be up north, but he is the sort of keeper we should look at. Good foot work, good on crosses, good shot stopper and clears his lines well. It would make such a difference to us.

I was thinking that, he was a very average goalkeeper and has seemingly turned a good goalkeeper in Slocombe into an average one.

The best keepers I have seen up the Kassam this season were the Newport and Accrington goalies. Both did the basics very well.

Two things from this thread:
1. People keep mentioning Max's age saying "he's only 22". He's actually the same age as Matt Ingram (ex-Wycombe keeper now at QPR) and Southend's Bentley - who were widely praised as the best two keepers in this division last season. Ingram certainly benefited from his loan at Oxford City a couple of years back and both he and Wycombe reaped the rewards. Hopefully Max's loan at Southport will be a catalyst for him to take the step up and become the regular 'keeper here.
2. Where does anyone get the idea that Slocombe was a good goalkeeper before he came here? He has always been suspect at coming for crosses - even in Scunthorpe's promotion season he was their weak link. He's a fine shot stopper, there is no doubt about that, but he has cost us at least 4-6 points this season - points that could have secured our promotion by now - with his uncertainty and hesitancy in his area. Scunthorpe were happy to let him go on a free because they knew the could and had to get better.
Actually make this 3 things:
I would think that Stevens is likely to be sent out on a season-long loan to gain experience next season. This is a big close-season for Max. If he isn't challenging for a first team spot come the end of pre-season, then I can't see him staying.

From an administrative point of view, start Crocombe, Slocombe on bench, loan out Stevens and release Büchel would be the easiest (assuming a new keeper is not on the horizon). Though this would be a touch unfair on Benji as he still has scope for improvement and has made the jersey his over the past few weeks. He would walk into most League 2 teams, not to mention most teams in Switzerland's second division, so he may already have irons in the fire.
Certainly going to be an interesting press release after the season is over.

I would think that the club will keep Benji try to offload Slocombe and replace him with somebody better and and probably use Stevens rather than Crocombe as third choice, loaning him out to a non league team.

Seems a lot of people have forgotten/ignored Mapp's criticisms of Max before he left, to me it didn't sound a boot up the arse, more of a you have no future here.
Really cannot see why anyone would want to risk another untested goalkeeper considering how it's gone between the sticks this year

Personally I think BB will become a very good goal keeper in the future. Is keep him as understudy to an experienced keeper and look to off load Slocombe.

Find it staggering that people don't think we could find better keepers than the ones on our books. They are significantly weaker than the rest of our squad

Do you honestly think that the best defensive record in League 2 has been achieved with keepers that 'are significantly weaker than the rest of the squad'? Frankly, and not easy, I admit, we could probably find players better in every position than the ones already on our books.

I think if we had a keeper as good as the rest of them we would have conceded less. And the reason why we had such a good defensive record is due to the staggeringly good work of the team defending generally that we limited the oppo to very few shots, as you can see here. All legaue 2 teams I reckon would bite our arm off to have any of our 16 odd senior first team outfield players on their books. Think most would pass on the GKs.

My view is that Buchel & Slocombe have been equally unimpressive this year. Mappy had reached the point I think where he would have played Crocombe had he been at the club. He stuck with Buchel and as he quoted at the time "out of the two, Benji is a bit stronger and comes for more" or words to that effect. He was clearly struggling to pick either, but had to go with one.
Benji has had some good games since but he was such a weak link in the 2 of the games before our final 3. Personally I would keep Benji as in fairness it has been a massive step up for him and find Slocs a new club. Either give Max a chance to battle it out with Benji or send Max on loan to L2 and bring someone experienced in.

Personally think BB is a bit unfairly taking a bit of stick. He has made an error or two, yes. Generally, however, I think he has been impressive for us. His kicking is his weakest area of his game.
Never really seen BB stats for his career, but has he ever played a full season at any decent standard before? If he hasn't, I would say he has had a good first season (not that it's a full one as he had to dislodge SS)

I think that Benji thoroughly deserved to be number 1 at the end of the season. In the last 3 games he didn't have a huge amount to do, but I can remember excellent saves at Carlisle and Wycombe both at huge times in the game (he came out and spread himself to stop the opposition chances to score) I am not saying that we couldn't do better, but Benji is quite young for s keeper and is getting better. I would be happy for him to be No 2 to an experienced No 1 (not sure he would), but I reckon that Slocombe and Max should be off.
