To lighten this up a little and represent where things sit at the moment I would think a banner with Ronnie Barker may be more appropriate.

Maybe we could get some tinpot drummers, sponsored by Ian Paice from Deep Purple (Bicester lad).

Or do we have any Austrians that might be insulted?

Just a brief side-point. The article you quote was written by a guy who has been repeatedly accused of plagiarism, has had an Orwell Prize withdrawn because of this, and who has been caught using a pseudonym to edit his critics' wikipedia pages. Not his finest hour(s) indeed... I think a banner with Johan Hari on it would be really very bad. On the other hand a picture of same as njones' avatar would tickle me. Mods?

Great idea re Winston. Duke of Marlborough used to be club president. But just to be 'politically correct' let's also have a banner of the TUC General Secretary as well - she's an Oxford lady. And a little picture of Tim Henman, (Oxford's greatest ever bottler) as well Oh and just for the hell of it, Thom Yorke, his in your face misery would go down well behind the goal this season. We don't want to upset green murphy do we?

Mods? yeah - Johan would probably say the 'fighting on the beaches' thing was his quote. sad really because in many ways he was a fine journalist. Ronnie Barker's antique shop gets my vote thus far.

On the eve before D Day the D.Company of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry had the following targets: Capture the bridges over the river Orne and the Caen canal. This commando unit will be flown in by 6 Horsa gliders. After the capture of the bridges the area is to be cleared from obstacles that may hinder the main force. But the most important order is: 'Hold, unto relieved' This was the first action of the Normandy invasion and was an incredible success by the men of Oxfordshire, taking two critical bridges that then prevented the German SS Panzer Tank divisions from driving the British and Canadians off Sword, Gold and Juno D Day beaches the next day. They landeded six Horsa gliders, from the Oxs and Bucks, near their landing zone, between the area of the river Orne and the Caen canal. The gliders were flown in the dark, engineless, from the channel, and crashed into flooded fields with multiple anti glider defences. Within 10 minutes the most famous of all bridges during the Normandy campaign is captured and in firm hands by the 6th Airborne Division. After the insignia of the division, the flying horse from the Greek mythology, the bridge adopts its name, and is now known as 'Pegasus'.

I take it the fearless crusaders against political correctness will be happy to stand next to banners of heroic figures like...
Tony Benn Tony Blair Ken Loach HM King Abdullah II of Jordan Bill Clinton Indira Gandhi Rupert Murdoch Aung San Suu Kyi Baroness (Shirley) Williams
all Oxford educated and doubtless familiar faces at The Manor.
not to forget of course a certain Margaret Thatcher? Why are we ignoring her?
and David Cameron our serving PM and MP for Witney. and his coalition is yellow and blue!

I grew up on a Bicester council estate and was educated in Bicester & Banbury. He spent his formative years in Dublin before being educated in Berkshire, Brighton & Harrow. He was MP for Oldham as memory serves...

I'm not totally sure the storm trooper is an Oxonian either. But at the end of the day does it really matter. Jim smith never had a submarine! Matty Murphy was no more magic than Paul Daniels and contrary to common belief , we're not by far the greatest team the world has ever seen! It's just a flag

I, personally, would feel quite uncomfortable standing next to a big flag of Winston Churchill giving the two fingers after certain remarks he made about countries not too dissimilar to that of my parents.
On a slightly similar issue, I can't help but notice a lack of non-white faces in the crowd at Oxford games presently. I think a big banner of such a politically divisive character could have a detrimental effect in recruiting new Oxford United fans who are not White British.

There is a reason why football grounds are not full of such banners - they are simply a really bad idea. Football fans are not a homogenous group of people all eager to whistle the dam busters theme tune and buy a royal plate made by the Franklin mint. we are all races, all opinions, all creeds, all backgrounds so football banners should reflect football history that's why Anfield is bedecked in Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Stevie Gerrard and the European Cup - and not Winston Churchill, Bobby Sands and Guantanamo Bay. so many Oxord icons to choose from... how about Jim Smith in a big yellow submarine?

Two large banners, each corner of the East stand. Looking from pitch, left hand side Shotton, caption 'ROCK'. Right hand side Briggs. Caption 'HARD PLACE'.
That should do it...

A lot of people seem to want a big say in it. If your that keen go make a banner yourself, these guys do a great job and suggested a idea of using an iconic image with a clever play on an iconic phrase. It's not racist , it's not to wind anyone up, if your that easily offended I suggest football may not be the place for you. sometimes there is swearing! 5-17 year olds are being taught about winston Churchill and what he achieved for our country in school everyday. It's political correctness gone mad. Be saying we shouldn't wear yellow next as it can be used to describe a skin type
