Have you used both grandfather and grandmother's name there Sarge? It should be one or the other, then where you grew up, so if you were a Headington boy, you'd be... George Headington and the Rileys or Valerie Headington and the Rileys Based on that theory, I'd be Ronnie Rectum and the Jamrags ( well, I've been called an ar*ehole and a c*nt many times) But eventually they christened you David? I can't understand why your parents changed their mind.

My first memory was my first game in 85 (I was 9 then) when Dave Langan scored to beat Shrewsbury 1-0. I couldn't see a thing, didn't see the goal and I didn't realise that promotion to the first division meant so much - but the noise and the joy in the packed London road when we scored got me hooked.

Probably sacrilege to say i don't remember exactly when and and against who my first game was against...early season game in 97/98 I think...still remember walking up the London Road steps, a bit unsure what to expect and walking into the stand and seeing THAT pitch bathed in bright sunshine...instantly hooked.
7-1 loss against Birmingham City - Mike Salmon in goal...brummies climbing up the floodlights etc...was my mate's one and only trip up the manor...we left a few minutes early - missed our goal and still didn't get on the bus any early than the rest of the crowd...lessons learned!
That FA Cup game against Chelsea...most incredible atmosphere I experienced up there I think...remember vividly when the penalty was given. The place almost seemed to go silent for a second, then the noise and indignation curved right around the ground, starting at the far end of the Beech Road closest to where it happened and rushing around the stands like a mexican wave almost!
Kevin Francis getting in the Right-side of the London Road and leading everyone in some funny arm dance thingy...
Who was that fella who used to randomly decide to start monkeying about the rafters? Much to the amusement of all in the LR, but less so to the stewards.
What I wouldn't give to hear one more "Give us an Ooooooooo...." from Nappy.

Have you seen the Northern Soul film that is out at the moment? sure have ...saw it in Wigan (really) last friday night...cinema was sold out ( as was the club where I spun tunes at the after film party later)- Yate ran for almost as long as Wigan..early '75-'82, as yet has never had the accolades or kudos that the 'Casino has always been given, not even (again as yet) a compilation cd.....yet to those of us in the South in the seventies on the soul scene, Yate was equally as valid as the 'Casino ..... btw there were many, many Oxford Utd fans who regularly went to Yate Film out on dvd for under £10 ...sainsburys kidlington got it on the shelf £7.99 IMO yes, its got a few inaccuracies,it was low budget, but all in all a decent overview of two younish lads discovering the highs and lows of the northern soul scene during its glory years

I could have sworn that Ipswich game was a Saturday match!! Yeh it was a Saturday game but near winter so floodlights were prob on in the second half. Sent from my GT-N7100 using proboards I remember we were doing a charity fancy dress stretcher race around Littlemore/Iffley that Saturday morning - Half in every pub then finished up in a hotel in Iffley. By the time we got up to the Manor we were more steamed than normal. From memory a few of the stretcher teams were going on to the game that day. No funnier sight than seeing a group of monks and vestel virgins in the left side London Rd. We dressed as Oxford supporters for the race (cop out I know but we certainly fared better than the vestel virgins!) Ipswich at home was one of the best ever days both on and off the pitch.

My first memory goes back to the late 50's when my Dad started taking me to games. Saturday home matches were always the same. We stood on the Osler Road side and he used to get a milk crate that he stored over the fence in one of the back gardens for me to stand on. After the match it a walk to my Nan's house for tea (buttered home made scones!) and then at 6 o'clock we used to walk to the London Road newsagent to buy a Green'Un and read all about the match. I still don't get how they managed to get all the results and reports, print the thing and transport it to Headington in an hour. In the sixties it was Big Ron, his permanent tan, and shorts that were so tight they probably would be too small for Alfie today. Then there was the man who used to hook the numbers for the half time scores on the wall by the dressing room. Particular games were the first game at the Manor in the football league against Lincoln and of course the epic Balckburn and Preston cup ties which I watched from the London road stand. How that scaffolding held up on the Beech road side I'll never know. In the late sixties and seventies I was absent as I played myself but I was lucky enough to play at the Manor a few times and it felt really special being in the same dressing room as the heroes I had grown up with. In the eighties I started to go back and watch games on the Beech road side -the Aston Villa semi final was probably the most memorable for sheer tension and excitement. The players and teams under Jim Smith produced the best football ever seen at the Manor. In the heady days of the old Division one, seeing John Motson climb the scaffolding to get onto a fairly small gantry in the roof of the Beech Road stand was a fairy regular oocurrence. Sadly the nineties were less memorable although Paul Moody's thumping penaltes brightened some afternoons and Matt Elliott's goal in the 4-0 win against Peterborough which saw us promoted was also special. Sadly the Kassam will never match the atmosphere produced at the Manor.

A few Manor memories from season 1974-75, the first year we beat ManUre in the league. Some of you may know Seamus who following a motorbike accident, used to sit in his wheelchair under the old dressing room stand between Cuckoo Land and Beech Road. I first introduced Seamus to the pleasure of watching United when we both lived in Abingdon and often joined him at home games.
We were playing West Brom and the score was 1 - 1 with about five minutes to go. West Brom had had a player sent off in the second half and were hanging on for a draw. Oxford were flagged offside and the ball rolled near where we were watching. Their keeper, John Osborne, clearly time wasting, was taking forever to collect the ball. I decided enough was enough. I ran on the pitch to reach the ball just before him and threw it to their full back for the free kick. You should have seen the look he gave me. Anyway, as the game moved into the final moments of injury time, West Brom broke out and won a corner. I recall Seamus's brother saying to me, "You're going to feel awfully stupid if they score from this." Fortunately they didn't.
Towards the end of that same season, we were at home to Sunderland who were closing in on ManUre in the promotion battle. Naturally they brought a large contingent and were packed into Cuckoo Lane. Five minutes from time Colin Clarke struck a beauty to open the scoring and poor Sunderland could see promotion slipping away. From the Cuckoo Lane emerged this enormous Wearsider who grabbed our keeper, John Milkins, and, egged on by the fans from up north, started to hit him about the head and ruffle up his wonderfully Brylecreamed hair. It took half the Oxford team to bring him down before two coppers escorted the gigantic intruder out. As they passed us, I said something to the effect that he was a very naughty boy. Whereupon, he stopped and gave me the evil eye. I don't know who was more terrified, me or the coppers. Seamus of course was laughing his head off

5-5 score draw against Portsmouth. Portsmouth go 3 up, then it's 3-1, 4-1, 4-2, 5-2. Then OUFC do the mutha of all comebacks to bring it back to 5-5 with only a few minutes left. Never seen a game like it, and don't think I ever will - crazy scenes!

One of my first memories of the Manor was when we played Stoke and I wanted to see Gordon Banks, I jumped over the Cuckoo lane wall early doors and hid until kick off, I stood by the little wall between the cuckoo lane and the Manor club, after about 20 minutes after kick off I got bored and left, I couldn't see anything as being so young was struggling to see over the wall.

The old man always tells me of a few:
The first game after Ian Greaves left us for Wolves, night game against Reading, kick off delayed, great atmosphere.
When the Millwall fans came in the LR after a fight erupted. One solitary Millwall fan was left crying, asking for the coppers to let him out.
Ipswich 4-3 obviously
The Portsmouth match when Robert Maxwell came in the London Road
Villa in the semi final of the Milk cup, before Wembley.
Gutted I never got to go, born in 93 I never quite made it to the Manor, but the stories on this forum alone paint an amazing picture.

Strangely my first visit to the Manor was as an away fan,Burnley with my dad 1971, 2-1 Oxford,Cassidy and Roberts,a few years later Cass lived 3 doors down from me. My first visit to the skip was as a Burnley fan as well,League cup semi final 1969,Burnley won that night, but lost the 2nd leg at home. So I hated the scum long before I started following Oxford.

I've got some great memories of the manor but the few that stand out for me are my first game in 1990 against notts county last day of the season if I remember correctly and a very young joey beauchamp scored the goals to seal a 2-1 win, also when joey smashed 1 in from 35 yards against blackpool in the promotion year, I remember getting crushed at the front of the London road the place went wild, also last game of the season that year against peterborough 0-0 at half time the place was so tense but as soon as that goal went in that was it party time! Also getting robbed against Chelsea in the cup!! The year we beat qpr 4-1 at home followed that by smashing stoke 5-1, and of course always beating the scum! I don't know what game it was but Kevin Francis came into the London road and at the top of his voice started singing we hate Swindon hahaha! No away team ever liked coming to the manor, how different it is now aye!
Oh how I miss the manor, it was our home!!!

Random Manor memories , the Manor on TV ( not with the Us featuring)
.... there was a TV series ( albeit a short one) where some of the Manor faithful were invited along as crowd extras ...cant remember the title ? ( Im sure someone can? ) it was about a striker at a(n English) football club who was signed by a big (European?) club, background crowd shots, including the player 'visiting' his old club and getting a bit of stick were shot in the Beech Road stand, and Cuckoo lane behind the goal, and, of course footage was also shot on the hallowed turf too .... memory is hazy today , all I can recall is it was sometime in the late 70s- early 80s ( though that might be wrong too?)
Also there was a short series with the actress who plays sally webster on coronation st playing the part of a vagrant punk called (I think) 'mad bastard'...again memory not to clear on this, but some of the footage was filmed in the cemetary next to the old (no longer there) Lucy Factory in Jericho..... it was something to do with the main male character trying to 'save' an old cinema from shutting down ( think Didcot cinema was the one used)...and , if memory serves ( maybe Im confusing it with an early Morse episode? ) , there was some footage from outside the manor on a matchday which kind of wove into the story, again, I cant at this moment recall what the title of that one was either(anyone?)

The post from Sarge has reminded me about the filming of a 'Jim'll Fix It' segment at The Manor. Some Arsenal supporting kid was upset at how rubbish his team were, so asked if he could ref a game and fix it for them to win. The TV company chose to re-create our 3-2 Milk Cup win over them. I was in the crowd for the filming of that. Strange day.

Yeah something like that. Shotton got sent off for complaining about the ref using a double-headed coin for the toss, I think 4 got sent off at a free-kick for being too close in the wall, and Steve Hardwick got sent off for saving a penalty.
