Certainly nice to have the BBC rather than having to put up with ITV or Sky. Although of course the Tories would love to get rid of the BBC in the long term.
Having said this, can't stand Hazel Irvine. Even during the opening ceremony she managed to call Dmitry Medvedev the Russian President and said that Rwanda would like to be known for things other than the genocide.

Not surprised - I am truly shocked I mean you could almost understand if it was the world cup or something, but the Americans love the Olympics and the 100m in particular! Truly makes you appreciate how lucky we are. This simply would not be tolerated in the UK or anywhere else in Europe (ie the real land of the free!). Not entirely sure the Americans love the Olympics. Apparently, according to the man himself, the reason the great Michael Johnson is commentating on the BBC is because he's virtually unknown in the USA as the American public - in general - has little or no interest in athletics. Yup, and that's after making his name in two home Olympics. Marion Jones was pretty much shunned when she turned from college basketball to athletics. I would say their interest has declined further now they realise they can beat China on the medals table. They don't like coming second, so pretend it doesn't happen or isn't that important. Probably the same reason they don't play any international team sports.

Didn't realise they weren't that into the Olympics. Their attitude to sport is utterly baffling to me.

Yes, any money their athletes make is on the European circuit. If you imagine a huge collective of bad loosers then you have pretty much nailed their attitude to sport.

I was at the archery at Lords last week. A load of ignorant, whooping Americans were supporting their girl loudly, not clapping her opponent and talking when she was lining up her shots, then left en masse (noisily) when she got beaten.

foghornleghorn(So glad they don't play cricket) Oldest international cricket fixture is America vs Canada Pedantically, can I say the first fixture was between 2 club sides, and wasn't referred to as an international until much later.

My uncle in the States was raging about this. Truly mad. Not going to try and defend it - but the reason they didn't show the 100m live would've not been because they weren't interested, but rather because NBC wanted to hold it back and show it in "prime time", when it can get the most viewers and therefore the most advertising $s. They did pay more than a billion dollars for the TV rights - at least five times more than any other country in the world - so it's a bit off to say that the Americans aren't interested in the Olympics. Not showing the 100m live was down to greed rather than disinterest. Still going to make sure I'm never in the US when the Olympics are on again though.

Sounds more like it, but there is no excuse! It wasn't even on in the middle of the night!
I'd be interested to know what other countries didn't show it live. You'd be pretty much looking at North Korea and maybe a few middle eastern states

They could have watched it live on the BBC web if they really wanted to.

I don't think you can watch the BBC website from abroad. There was supposed to be coverage on the NBC website but it crashed apparently

In 2008, I was living in the US and not only did they not show the 100m live on TV - they didn't show it on their website either. Being unprepared for such ridiculousness, I then frantically scrabbled around to find a dodgy internet feed but by the time I did, the race was already over.

OK, here's what you do, you get a friend in the UK to set up the BBC website to watch it live and then stick a camera on it to watch through Skype.

Who put Manish on the boxing coverage? He's got stats wrong, doesn't know when Amir Khan won his Olympic silver even though he's interviewing him, and I'm sure he called Wladimir Klitschko 'Ivan.'

Paul Dickenson used to be my PE teacher in the early 80's. He just disappeared from school after the Commonwealth Games (Edinburgh I think?) when he fluffed his hammer throw and it landed almost on the track not far from the queen. Came back for first couple of weeks of term but I guess he got so much stick!
