WHU have won the battle the olympic stadium. Guess that's better than the Spurs plans, although I can see it all going wrong for them.

What I can see happening is West Ham getting it, then after a year or so, the athletics track disappearing and no one mentioning it.

Question is... how do you make an athletics track disappear?

I'm indifferent to athletics and feel the money spent on the Olympic Stadium was/is a total waste, but having built it and held an Olympics there, it would be utterly wrong to hand it over to a football club with no intentions to retain the track.
Granted, Spurs' plan includes redeveloping Crystal Palace, which is all we should have done in the first place, but what sort of legacy is that?
Yet more evidence of Premier League arrogance if you ask me; sod the athletics fans, Crystal Palace will do!
Personally, I don't think it should go to any football club and should become a national sports stadium and a centre of excellence for British athletics.
Surely that is the true legacy that was promised when we bid.

But in Olympics you're only going to (possibly) stage a major event once every year or every 2 years, you may have smaller events inbetween but you'll have a huge stadium with a handfull of people there and the place will lie empty all the time. West Ham will keep the running track but as we all know that will create a poor atmosphere for football. I'd be dead against it if was a hammer

Nobody caares about athletics anyway!!
But i have been in Upton park at least 30 times over the years and its a shame that WHU may leave and i doubt a lot of their fans will be happy about this
Yet again the owners just want a large plastic bowl type ground with little care or thought about what the fans want!!

I'd be dead against it if was a hammer I don't disagree which is why I consider it a waste of money; a nice massive shiney expensive stadium for a single event. A comprehensive renovation of Crystal Palace would have been sufficient in my book, but then I don't care too much for the Olympics. But having built it as an athletics stadium it should, at the very least, be able to continue to hold athletics events for years to come. And of course it could be another venue for large concerts, NFL etc

Said in the Evening standard yesterday that West Ham have a waiting list of 17,000 and have 700,000 names on a data base.....
They could become the 2nd biggest club in London....
In my view - they just could knock the stadium down and it had to be the right bid to accept.

Never been on this website before!
OUFC - if the game ended at half time would be 17th in the league but based on 2nd halves only we would be 4th and only 3 points of the top.
Something for CW to look at.....

As I've said before its a fairly pointless move for West Ham. They, unlike spurs, are not in need of growing their capacity because, though they might be getting near capacity gates now, when they get relegated to the championship they won't be attracting as many and if they don't come back up pretty quickly that decline may well be long term.
In addition to which, what is there that's attractive about sitting in a stadium not designed for football to watch matches anyway? The match day experience will become so poor that its unlikely to attract any more fans even if they don't go down.

According to the stats on the website above Morecambe's highest crowd this season is 4000 more than their ground capacity, thats impressive!

But Stratford will have great transport links for the majority of their Essex fan base plus it won't be for a few seasons yet so even if they do get relegated by the time they play in it they could be Premier league or at least pushing for promotion, everyone likes a winning team so they could get big gates in a promotion chasing side.

I guess you're right but its all ifs buts and maybes isn't it. Bit of a gamble considering there is effectively nothing wrong with what they have now except for transport issues and perhaps slightly ageing facilities, thing which affect a lot of clubs.

And it is their area of London - their borough.
Its 10 miles from Tottenham, which in a city the size of London - is a long way away.....
Though I did like some of the aspects of the Spurs plan. It was a shame they could not make West Ham follow some of this.
Then again - as stated on the original thread we had - this should have been sorted and finalized 2 years ago.....

Went on a west ham forum just to see what they were saying, and most are happy. They realise that they had to grow and are willing to sacrifice a bit of a view to do this. Also had Tottenham ( a bigger and better team) won the bid, then a lot of people in West Ham's catchment would become Spurs fans.

The stands as they are are all pretty modern and large, the one that is most in need of work backs directly onto a road and if they increased the height it would block out the light into flats behind.

Won't having a long jump pit on the half way line make games a bit difficult? Definite home advantage!
