People on here always rave about Wright and Worley being fantastic centre backs but the longest period without a clean sheet on the entire country suggest otherwise. 22 games without a clean sheet is a disgrace. I'm not sure what can be done outside the transfer window, emergency loan or something, but if we don't change the back four we'll slip meekly into mid table obscurity. Because only 2 players in the whole team defend and our full-backs don't push right up in attack leaving gaps at the back for opponents to exploit!

This is exactly what we do not need Beav. We need to show faith the the individuals and the clean sheets will come. Each player is clearly good enough at this level. And playing Gaughan over Wright? What a disaster that would be. You'd have thought if the clean sheets were going to come they'd have done so before now. All this settled side nonsense is really getting to me. The defence is not doing its job plain and simple. The problem needs to be identified and sorted ASAP or, as i have repeatedly said, even when we were winning, we can forget promotion. Its funny how a few wins changes peoples expectations... 2 months ago, we would have been happy to stay up, now we need to change the defence ASAP or we wont get promoted! Jeez cant we just enjoy the fact that in our first season back in the football league we have a decent top half team. Yes some players may not be the best in their position for this level, but why is that suddenly such an issue? The team is performing well overall, peoples expectations are just off the scale sometimes.

it was less then 8 months ago we finished 3rd in the conference a massive 13 points behind stevenage , we are at present 5 points in front of them ...yes they have 3 games in hand but still a tremendous gap closed on last season we are playing free passing attacking football but unfortunatly conceding goals on a regular basis if we had been offered this position in may last year is there any right minded oxford fan that wouldnt have took it?

We are one of the biggest and best supported clubs in this division. Our defence is the weak link at the moment and if it was sorted we would most probably have a chance of making the play/offs. Why settle for where we are now when we have the resources to do better?

The only reason this defence issue irks me is because I feel that we are selling ourselves short. Staying up was the objective and should still be the main issue, but it would be a shame to think that we were good enough to go up this season and missed out because a simple problem with the defence went unaddressed.

We are all enjoying the "fee flowing" football and the way the team is set up to achieve this, but the defence are leaking goals.
We are coming back from being behind and winning games, since when has that happened in the past.
If we concentrate on bottling up the midfield and sitting players on top of the back 4, will we see the "free flowing" football then, there is a balance to be had and that requires tweaks not whole sale changes, CW will carry on tinkering until he finds the right balance, the management are just as concerned about the defensive frailties and will sort it out, we have not got loads of money to chuck at the situation under the frugal stance of IL, and would that solve anything anyway.

What would your line-up be with that in mind? We only really have 2 holding midfielders, Maclaren and Payne as far as I can tell, although I guess Clist might fit in there. And what sort of formation are we looking at with that?

I'd like to see Payne given a chance on Saturday with a side with McLaren and MacLean in. For me Heslop is better coming off the bench....he hasn't really done it for me of late and I'd rate Hall above him overall as he's a better "athlete". eg: Clarke, then Purkiss, Worley, Wright, Tonkin, then McLaren in holding role in front of the back four, then Hall , Payne, Clist across the middle, then MacLean and Beano up top. Bench: Keeper, Sangare, Heslop, Hackney, Craddock, Potter, Midson. Would agree there's a lot of attacking players there ...e.g. what happens if Purkiss is injured and has to be replaced? maybe Gaughan or Kinniburgh instead of a forward.
