I have lived away from Oxfordshire for years mostly in London and also spending time in various us parts of the country through work.
But in the past couple of weeks I have been in Oxfordshire most days. What has happened to our great county?
No manners anymore, just lots of fat women in leggings. Also most people seem to be be dressed in cheap Primark crap, whole families looking awful.
My biggest disappointment was the lack of manners and community. Being away I try and ignore some of the yokel nonesense but when I was young we had a sense of belonging and a togetherness.
Not being funny but the general Oxfordshire people and community spirit is just not there anymore!!

After that I moved to Asia and when I go back, I feel very little belonging or identity to Oxford apart from our great club. I remember the old days when I was a teen, pubs, The Manor, etc but little else. I feel it's just times change, we move on, and progression happens. In my younger days, we didn't have mobile phones, didn't have Internet, our WhatsApp and Facebook was meeting down the pub, catching up and finding out what people had been upto. Trying to pull was down the pub as well or Fifth Avenue or some other dive, now you have Tinder!

Is London famed for the good manners and friendly welcome you get then?
What parts of Oxfordshire are you talking about, because I want to know if I should be offended or not?

Certainly not but most people in my part of London are not Primark tramps. I live in Southwest London and people are far more friendly and community focused than what I come across in Oxfordshire! My point was years back we Oxfordshire people has pride and style and manners. That's missing now!

I have worked in both Oxford and London, both are a mixed bag of all sorts. Think what you two have become is old, rather than any great drop in standards from the populous of Oxfordshire, happens to everyone I am afraid.

I imagine they’re prone to gross generalisations too.

I blame Brexit, up until article 50 was triggered we won the best dressed county award several years running.
By the way you don’t see woman wearing primark crap in Chippy, (a) We don’t have a Primark. (Thank you God) (b) Even if you wore several layers of Primark’s best you’d freeze to death walking along the top side in Chippy.

Add in non-affordable housing where people actually want to live, terrible roads and transport links, then pave and build poor-quality accommodation over the outskirts of pleasant towns around the county and fill the housing estates with certain groups and you'll achieve massive turnover in the quality and type of person living somewhere. There is no such thing as 'community' in 2017. We're now 'global'... Tony Blair said it would be better this way and of course he wouldn't lie for personal gain.

Blame Clarkson, probably does it to keep all the foreigners out.

I like to believe it’s true. Edit, just seen Flean’s post!

My nan grew up in chipping norton, whereas most people's nans walk around like the Michelin man once they are in their eighties, she considers Oxford almost Caribbean like and only puts on a coat if it rains.
Didn't know that about the Moscow thing but having done some work on the top floor of the old mill that is now posh flats I can believe it.

Well, people of Oxfordshire, you certainly seem to be letting the side down!
No manners.
Just lots of fat women in leggings.
Most people dressed in cheap Primark crap.
Lack of community spirit.
No style, pride or class.
And all of this observed in the past couple of weeks, and definitely not generalised bunkum. Tut tut everyone.

Never forget rugby games on the top pitch. Bah. Torture.

I use to spend more time in Lancashire seeing my late mother and found people up there more friendly and personable.
Throwing a question out there. With social media and more "keyboard warriors", does it mean people can express themselves more? Can they say things and get away with it whereas before you could only say what you thought and that was only verbally and in public?

People in the north do seem to be generally more open and friendly. People may think I made a sweeping generalisation but I was always proud of Oxonians as they had an independent spirit and class. Not that I ever thought we were better than anyone else. But we had some dry wit and were friendly on the whole. Now its more of a Jeremy Kyle generation and I guess it's the same everywhere but I just see Oxfordshire people as I used to!

People in the north do seem to be generally more open and friendly. People may think I made a sweeping generalisation but I was always proud of Oxonians as they had an independent spirit and class. The first point is undeniable. Before I moved to Oxfordshire some 30 years ago I lived in North Herts, a region ahead of Oxford in only 1 respect - it was (and has been) swallowed into the London suburbs faster. People there used to talk about local spirit, old people with local accents - the same things you're mentioning. In the past 30 years South Oxon has gone a long way from a rural area facing a developed local centre towards suburbanisation. I'm afraid this is why people are ruder, that they eat worse and dress poorly is probably more to do with the calamitous reduction in actual wage power for the unskilled, uneducated and unwashed. Within 5 years it will be time for me to fly, into life's mystery (to quote Richman J), or at least further from the Great Wen.

Opposite is true in Chippy, 30 years ago there was a great sense of local pride, spirit and community, plus the best accent in the county. Then the Chipping Norton set moved in.
