It could be a way of getting released from his contract early. Only trouble is that, I guess he will be giving up his right to a loyalty bonus. I'm no expert in employment law but I'm fairly sure that kicking someone in the head constitutes gross misconduct.

Could get a big fine from the French FA and could even end up prosecuted. So no way would that be a way to get out of his contract early. He wasn't even in the team and is unpopular with the supporters so he probably only needed to ask to be let go.
