A should win for England, and if they do it would confirm their place at the finals. This match marks around one year since Southgate took over the reins from the disgraced Sam Allardyce, so to me Southgate's achievements in the wake of that are commendable.
England have lost just one of their last 18 home matches, while Slovenia have lost just two of their last eleven matches in all competitions.
Forecast England 3 Slovenia 1.

Lets face it, we had pretty much reached rock bottom in France. Credit to Southgate but the only way was up surely?. Its no massive achievement for England to qualify for a major international competition, its what you do when you get there that counts and sadly we have not been anywhere near good enough at major tournaments for a long time. I do think we have the potential though to improve, Russia might come a bit too soon but after Russia, i think we are going to become an International force once again.
2-0 tonight Kane and Rashford

Oxlade-Chamberlain meant to be starting, if true then it sums up the state of our team. Possibly one of the most out of form players that could have been picked, has been woeful recently

Sure the team with Ashley Cole, Terry, Ferdinand, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes etc had World Class players and underachieved. But now? The cupboard is pretty bare. So Kane and Alli may well become World Class players. The rest? Nowhere near as good as those mentioned above. There is real potential with Stones and Stirling as they are playing for Pep at a very good level. So I would argue that with the current players qualifying is OK and you really shouldn't expect the team to do that well in Russia unless we find a way of getting Kane, Alli to get as much of the ball as they do for Spurs.

Alli for Oxlade- Chambelain makes the team much stronger, but the back up for the first team is pretty poor. The U20's/ U21's need to start getting into the Premiership sides and then giving Southgate some options.

Kane is probably the closest but to be considered at that level he needs to perform at an international tournament and at champions league level. He was woeful at Euro 16. Rashford is nowhere near world class IMO.

Time will tell but i haven't seen many better teenagers in the world than Rashford.

England are pretty much through whatever happens tonight, Lithuania on Sunday away and they are currently losing 1-0 in Malta. Southgate should be sacked for managing to make this group slightly hard work, because it couldn't be any weaker.

The glaringly obvious person we lack right now is a creative midfielder. Could make a huge difference.

It's always so painfully slow. Even when the ball breaks in midfield there is no urgency to move forward and counter, every single game. It's a total snooze fest where the other sides often lack real quality to do damage and then a late goal sneaks the points. It's been like this for years. Fine in qualifying against largely poor to mediocre sides, it'll get you through after ten games, but then as soon as a tournament comes along with good teams in it you know what's going to happen. Suddenly the opposition has quality and the defeats roll in.
It's all so predictable and dull. This will likely end 1-0 or maybe 2-0 to England with fairly late scoring and then next summer decent sides will show up and it'll be back to crashing out.

Blimey, this is painful to watch. Rashford looks like the only player with the confidence and balls to take anyone on.
I did wonder if I'd found a hidden 'slow motion' setting on my TV, but apparently this is the full blooded cut and thrust of England's international football at full speed!

Anyone think that Gareth needs to pick a captain and not rotate?
I think Cahill should be.

From the little I've seen absolutely bereft from England. Dull, uninspiring, so like Roy Hodgson he may as well be reappointed as manager. We'll be out in the group stages at the WC because we lack talent and tactical nous. The central midfield would look better with Simon Heslop and Asa Hall in it.

It's happened in pretty every tournament in the last 20 years. Sky high expectations, low end results, lots of England fans disappointed. Some of those teams were talented, this one isn't. And the manager isn't smart enough to organise them to make them hard to beat. The worst of all worlds with Southgate.
