A spectator made a formal complaint and the incident was reported to the police. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41790381Apparently the red card was for (re) leaving the pitch without the refs permission. A ref can only issue a yellow card for leaving the field of play without permission. Maybe he already had a yellow from earlier in the game. True. I would assume when the referee realised that a bit later on he would class it as abusive/offensive language or gesture. As like you say he could of already had a yellow or it was the wrong decision.

Did he actually leave the field of play during the game or whilst the physio was on the pitch attending to a player etc? And how a supporter can put in an official complaint is beyond me. I'd actually think it was quite funny if I was there, but to complain, what's the World coming to.
The referee seems to have acted OTT. It's a bit like players who have been sent off for defending themselves if being physically attacked from a supporter entering the field of play, crazy.

Remember Jens Lehmann doing this in a game in Germany once, can't recall if he got a card for it though. Whatever, Max is now part of the pantheon of Question of Sport, books and online trivia.

I’m sure Liniker shit himself during an England game... may even have been in the world cup Correct - I delighted my daughter yesterday by telling her to Google 'Gary Lineker shit' and seeing what came up. I'm such a wag.

No we bought twats like Ripley, Martinez and George Long in instead of giving Max a proper chance. Any real need for that? Ripley and Martinez played one game each on emergency loan, one plays now in La Liga and the other in the Championship. George Long did not live up to his billing here but is nonetheless starting at the same level as us right now. Max on the other hand played four games in a year at Carlisle and is now at the sixth tier of English football. You can have a rant about not giving him a go, but the stats don't lie I'm afraid.
