I don't think Churchill supported Oxford United. Might be wrong. Neither did the ghostbusters, darth vader, stormtroopers or the oxen that wandered the ford. This is awkward. Darth Vader - now there is man I can relate to. Or how about the former Moroccan leader Sultan Moulay Ismail He apparently had 30,000 of his political enemies and lazy servants executed and also sired 854 children. A blokes bloke you'd have to say.

Does that matter, it's an iconic image and a clever play on words using something like we will fight them on the pitches, is unique and will look great I think we're too late. Dynamo Dresden have already adopted him. that is a quality free kick from the politically incorrect stable. really deeply offensive! One can only applaud... (I think)

If someone can put it to a vote, then democracy can lead the way! Fine. But if we start decorating our fanbase with tasteless pseudo-wartime kitsch then I will complain to the club and stop attending matches. Just so we're clear.

He's also the reason you're not typing in German... An often-made, but inaccurate, assumption. If the Nazis had conquered this nation, it would have been administered by home-grown, English-speaking puppets, as were other Nazi dominions. No doubt Churchill would have led the resistance, proudly sporting his blue and yellow scarf ....

Churchill was voted by the British public as the greatest ever Briton so I think you're in a very tiny minority in being offended @greenmurphy I just fail to see the relevance between this historical political figure and my football club. Put up as many icons to Churchill as you wish at home or online - but don't cop-opt my football club into this hero worship. This is my last word on the matter as I must return to Castle Murph to watch the Dambusters and the 1966 World Cup Final. Rule Brittania!

Churchill was a great war leader - in the second world war, at least - and I have no reason to criticise him, but let's just accept that these type of polls can be suspect.

We could learn a lot from winston, his record is better than mapp. Played 1 won 1 Much better win ratio on the home front. Away, attacks in numbers, using different tactics and formations to out wit the opposition, while defending from the rear. Funny how some don't want the greatest ever mp on a flag, but are happy to revel in the glory days under a double agent mp/conman who's happy to fund it by stealing off pensioners

While the idea is good I'd rather see a banner of someone more connected to oxford united than someone who just comes from oxfordshire that banner should be of the man who put oxford united on the footballing map that man should be Arthur Turner
Sent from my SM-N9005 using proboards

Won't it be slightly tounge in cheek, and not really about politics?
He is an historical political figure.
A notorious racist (very recently his islamaphobic views are in the news) , a committed imperialist. He is a poster icon for a certain kind of bullish nationalism.
You will offend right wingers to whom he is some kind of quasi spiritual talisman.
And you will offend left wingers who read stuff like this:
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/not-his-finest-hour-the-dark-side-of-winston-churchill-2118317.html
and are very wary of the myth - even repulsed.
And this is a slippery slope. Who next? Thatcher? Why not?
Oh yes you're unlocking a Pandora's Box here people.
Stick with Olly The Ox
I Think your getting a little confused with Churchill the politician and Churchill the war time leader. As a LIBERAL MP he introduced the Trade boards bill, which brought in the minimum wage,he set up Labour exchanges to help unemployed people find work,he formed the Peoples budget plan, which taxed the rich to pay for social welfare reforms(later vetoed by the House of Lords.) He also (topical today) was against the carpet bombing of Dresden,he said at the time, "It seems to me that the moment has come when the question of bombing of German cities simply for the sake of increasing the terror, though under other pretexts, should be reviewed ... I feel the need for more precise concentration upon military objectives such as oil and communications behind the immediate battle-zone, rather than on mere acts of terror and wanton destruction"

Just a thought,Churchill served as an officer with the Queens own Oxfordshire Hussars, could we not have their military colours as a flag ? Ah, just wikied the above regiment, they were known as the Queer objects on horseback,so perhaps not.

The Oxford and Bucks regiment were the first to land the night before d day and captured two critical bridges in a famous move at Pegasus Bridge. Perhaps google the image of their famous Pegasus and turn it into yellow and blue

Just a brief side-point. The article you quote was written by a guy who has been repeatedly accused of plagiarism, has had an Orwell Prize withdrawn because of this, and who has been caught using a pseudonym to edit his critics' wikipedia pages. Not his finest hour(s) indeed...
