My birthday, midweek game, November 1985 - some reason we were on the Beech Road that night and were due to visit my Grandad in the JR after the game, I was 7. 3 down at Half time if I recall before shooting towards the London Road, Aldridge scored a hat-trick but my favourite goal of the night was from Neil Slatter. Quite a remarkable game of football, under the lights and is the stand out game from my early trips to the Manor. Or my overlong lasting memory was in the Osler Road, that was where I used to stand with my younger brother and Dad. Every game, plastic milk crate in hand cos we couldn't see over the wall, told to push through to the front, positioned our crates and then climbed under the metal barrier which was sat just off the concrete wall. Always felt safe their from all the dads and larger kids because when we scored, we would never get crushed or pushed due to that protective steel barrier. Would love to experience that one more time. I could have sworn that Ipswich game was a Saturday match!!

Loads of memories for me. But the best one was the Aston Vanilla game in around 1972. You had to be there to see the legend........

Loved the Manor. My first game was a 2-2 against Bristol Rovers in '92 I think. I was super young at the time and remember the insane pace of Chrissy Allen, and also remember asking my dad where the commentary was. We had season tickets on the LH side of the Beech Road stand for 8 years or so. They were brilliant times, and going to football every week was really important for my relationship with my dad as well.
Standout games for me:
- Chelsea in the FA cup..I remember the place going insane when Deano scored..and going insane (in a different way) when Vialli dived for that penalty. - 4-2 win against Newcastle in the season when they got promoted to the Premier League. Incredible display. - 3-0 against Milwall when Joey scored 2 beauties, including one run from his own half. - 5-0 against Burnley...absolute cracker!
Such a great ground, it was so nice being so close to the pitch and the acoustics of the stands made everything really loud. Also remember the really strong smell of disinfectant outside the player's entrance in the Beech Road stand.

Got 2 nice videos of me being mascot in the late 80s . Not widely available at the time unless u wanted to carry a tv crew style cini camera. Lucky my dad knew the man in charge of the police control room. So 5 mins before kick off the police cctv camera on the London rd end panned round and followed me for the entire warm up. Still have the 50p that Steve foster won in the toss up. Would have had both but my sister borrowed it to buy sweets and returned in in 10p without my knowing

Can anyone remember Paul Carrack with Ace singing "How Long" on a scaffold stage sticking out of the Beech Road stand - pre match & halftime entertainment!!! I remember it very well (except the year) I think it was 1974. Also remember some lucky b*stard riding a Honda Goldwing (1000cc) round the outside off the pitch, the same year. But pluggy kicking that ball off the penalty spot against Reading was brilliant (thanks for that, Paul) We used to bait our wonderful police at the games by singing songs like 'Dibble, Dibble - gives us a little wiggle!' and the immortal: 'We hate Softly, softly; we hate Z cars too. We hate Dixon of Dock green, but Oxford we love you!'

106's Barmy army. Smiler the steward at on the London Road. Also the teletubby St John's ambulance lady. There used to be genuine excitement at injuries (even if it was a key Oxford player) in the hope that the London road could cheer on the teletubby. St Johns (bless them) alwYs seemed desperately confused as to whether to enter the pitch or not and sometimes ended up doing circles in the penalty area through their indecision

Remember a particularly foggy night game in the early 80's you could hardly see beyond the half way line and every time the play moved down to the London road end, the crowd roared like we'd scored to wind up the visitors

We all had to move down the Cuckoo Lane end in the second half to see Oxford attack. Queing up all night to buy tickets for Man Utd in the milk cup, playing a game on the pitch, and kipping in the beach road seats. Pluggy getting a kicking for owning up to being one of the wa@&ers throwing coins. Aldo scoring three against Oldham for some reason.

THANKS, Eastandboy, for starting this absolutely brilliant thread. Just loved reading it, so far.
As my best friends will confirm, I'm not really well known for having a good memory. But I do have a couple of memories to share. One was when we were beating Man Utd. in a cup game, 2-1, and towards the end Charlton got the ball and seemed to just run into space. I yelled at people to close him down....but they didn't bother to listen to me, and he scored a brilliant goal to get the draw. We lost in the replay. How come I can remember a goal that hurt so much, but can't remember many of our really brilliant goals?
Well, that's not quite true. A saw my boyhood hero, Colin Harrington, score a goal that was better than Charlton's. At least, that's how I remember it.
Funniest thing I saw was in a reserve game. For a couple of years I would go to all the reserve games (we were really doing well, and were top of whatever league the reserves were in then). Have no idea what year it was, but must have been in the mid to late 60s. A defender blasted the ball really high into the air, aiming to clear not only the goal but into whatever was behind (obviously it wasn't the London Road end), and the entire defence just stood around and waited for the corner to be announced. But the wind kept the ball in, and it came down right in front of the goal and one of our players had the simplest of tasks to head it into the totally unguarded net.

We played Man U away in the FA Cup in '76. The night before, I got my ticket from the Manor and stayed to watch the reserve team game. What happened next beats f*cking all.......it was a really windy night. A tree was blown down behind the Cuckoo lane and the Osler Road roof was blown off, causing the game to be abandoned. I was in the Beech Road and had the best possible view! Magic! Just wish it could've been videotaped to show you all! The next day, at Old Trafford, we took f*ck all fans and lost the game 2-1 with two dubious penalties by Gerry Daley (I think that's his name)

Makes sense that it was a Saturday evening as I did think it was rather irresponsible, with hindsight, to take me to the JR after a midweek game when I had school in the morning.

Thinking about it, could've probably decapitated someone with the force it was being blown about. Yes the Man Utd game was 2-1 with, as you say, 2 highly dubious penalties from Gerry Daly. We had actually taken the lead in the first half with an amazing overhead kick from Derek Clarke from way out. I remember the next home programme carry a report and saying it would have been a contender for Goal of the Season had the cameras been there. I often think how awesome it would have been had all games back then had the goals shown on TV, as they do now. Which game/goal/footage would people love to have seen?

Anyone remember that goal from Andy Thomas against Sheff. Utd in around 1981, when he chipped the goalie from what looked like Cowley f*cking Centre? I was drinking with a load of their fans in Town before the game - brilliant lads.

Anyone else a ball boy and have the pleasure of being entertained by the late "Wedgey" and his jokes! Used to love the positioning of the ball boys room at the manor. Think it was Malcolm Eliza's office during the day. It was next door to the breakout area for the VIPs who were in the club seats in the beech road. Also next door to the ref's room! Many a time I witnessed Dennis Smith and more frequently, Malcolm Crosby going mental! Great times!

Going in soaking wet at half time to get a lil cup of tea. Was good though, especially if u got the corner of London rd osler rd and had to constantly keep being let out the turnstiles to go and try and find balls that had gone over into the Bowles .

Yes indeed the 4-3 win against Ipswich was amazing, I was celebrating so much when our 4th went in...I knocked the chick out who was next to me with my elbow as while coming down from leaping about to crack her right on top of her head !!
Aston Villa in the 70's was epic !! never have I seen the Oxford boys at soo much, as they methodicaly kicked out all the Vila fans from the London Road, I remeber walking into the stand before kick off thinking .."thats it..they have took the London Road" ..how WRONG was I !!
And
That 5-3 agaist the Scum, A because it was epic !! , B there was a group of around 6 or 7 Japanes students or tourists near me in the London Road, as the crowd got vocal they were joining in. Chants of F off Swindon were being sung by them with the (L) being pronounced hence Fluck off Swindon, all the hand gestures were mimicked thoughout the game and as the goals went in... 3 times I helped pick the girls off the floor after massive crowd surges...they were loving it. As we walked out after the game I asked if they had enjoyed watching Oxford United, they all beamed ..yes yes..we come back again ...Fair play to them.
