late sixties early seventies London Road favourite ...initially it was the full song ( Mary Hopkins/Sandie Shaw - those were the days)
lyrics (cut n pasted here)
Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And think of all the great things we would do
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
then just the chorus
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
then an adapted'London Road' version of the chorus...which will take a bit of thinking about to remember that version, I'll try to remember, though in the meantime if anyone can supply the 'London Road ' version of the chorus, post it up :-)
IMO - 'those were the days' would be an absolutely ideal candidate to be adopted as 'our' song....1) it WAS a big London Road favourite back in the day
2) the lyrics are easy to learn/remember,( like MANY pop(ular) songs of the 60s and 70s were and still are 3) Its already (as in previously) a proven song with the right tempo and structure for a football crowd 4)there is a local connection too Sandie Shaw lives in south Oxon, nearish to Abingdon, she did the first version which I think made the top 20 in the singles chat, albeit Mary Hopkins version with a(sir) Paul Mc Cartney production hit the number one slot in the singles charts...when they meant something unlike in recent times! 5) As a number one hit single from the late 60s, its a song known to the vast majority of older Oxford fans, thus the likely hood of the whole ground joining in...instead of just a small 'singing section' is more likely, and in its original format, its inoffensive to just about anyone and everyone!
With the emphasis on "we were young" sarge
