Why has a thread about Man City v Roma turned into a debate about Man U's current form and their chances of making the top 4.
After last night's result I think Man City will be lucky to get out the group. Last night was a great chance to put their mark on the group and they failed to do that.

There was some comment about this a while back, where Man Utd were inflating the real attendances at matches. A quick Google came back with this... When United played Cluj in the Champions League in December, having qualified for the knockout stages, the crowd was announced as 71,521. In fact, the police say it was 46,894.Blimey, they announced practically a sell-out, but it was only 2/3 full? This whole 'counting the season ticket holders' thing is nonsense. Google "Man Utd actual attendances". They're not the only ones who do it I would imagine. They probably don't care if fans actually turn up, so long as they've paid their money.

I'm not sure how Man Utd have weaseled their way in to this thread seeing as this thread is about a) Man CITY, and b) The Champions League. Two topics that are of no concern to Man Utd fans.

I would say, on supporting the English team that I rarely care and just plump for whichever I like the best overall. Tonight I would like to see Arsenal beat Galatasaray because I don't like Galatasaray

I thought tonight exposed the problem with Man City, in that they remain a collection of 11 people who happen to be wearing the same colour shirt, rather than a team. Each player was always trying to do it himself and only ever passed the ball when they ran into a dead end, rather than looking to take the best option for the team. They can get away with it in the Prem, but it is perhaps no co-incidence it falls down so often in Europe, where opposing teams are more adept at snuffing out individuals. I also think this is why they always seem to look better with Milner in the side (and maybe Lampard too) in that their attitude is sligtly different and more team focused. Milner in particular is always looking to play others in rather than do it all himself. 1 point from two games, not a good position! Need a good result in Moscow or else, but can you really see them doing it? Interesting to contrast this with the Arsenal game tonight, where they did seem more inclined to move the ball on quicker and work together rather than individually, and got their just rewards.

What's up Baldy? Scared City might go on a run and win the thing You wonder why people don't like Man Utd, one reason is cos they got fans like you who want all the English clubs to go out. Don't you realise the only reason we get so many clubs in is because of previous record, if they all go out early every year we could end up with just the Champions qualifying, and if that happens it could be years before Man Utd get back in it.If your not interested in the other English clubs progress or lack of, just don't bother watching, or coming on here making stupid comments Rant over Don't hold your breath. It would take a number of years of woeful underperformance for us to even lose our fourth CL spot, let alone dropping down to just the champions. The points system is skewed towards the status quo, so there is very little movement at the top of the list year on year. Just getting all four clubs into the group stage gets us a decent haul and that is before the points gained during that phase. Points are awarded for match results but also what stage of competition clubs reach. The total across both competitions for all clubs from a particular country, is calculated and divided by the number of clubs in the two tournaments (7 for England). At present, Spain, England and Germany are the top three, who qualify for 4CL spaces, with Portugal and Italy next in line. However, there is a large gap which would need to be overcome for that to change. but that would require a shift of 15 points in the relatiave averages, something that would take years to bridge. Just by getting 6 of our 7 clubs to the group stages here we already have enough points to For information - for us to lose our 4th CL spot, then the clubs from Italy or Portugal will need to accumulate around 90 points more than our clubs (2pts for a win, 1pt for a draw, 4pts for getting out of the CL groups, 1pt for each round after the groups stages) across both competitions over this and/or coming seasons to overtake us. Neither country has amassed enough points in a season in any of the last four years (maybe more) to make up that ground on us this year, even if not one of our clubs scored another point for the rest of this campaign. So while it can be seen to be a 'bad show' for not supporting all English teams regardless, wishing one or more an early departure is not going to impact on our qualifying status for some time to come (and let's be honest, how far would we want to see Swindon or Reading get if by some freak they qualified?) Frankly, I'm glad City didnt get anything out of the game last night as they didnt deserve it, but I'm glad Arsenal did well tonight, given how they played.

Mooro is absolutely right here. We don't need to worry about dropping out of the Top 3 in UEFA Coefficient anytime soon.
The only thing that a Man U fan might look at though is the club coefficient - every club gets points for what they do, but also 20% of the points that their nation gets over a given season.
Man U are obviously not going to get any points for themselves this season. They're currently ranked 7th. Schalke, Arsenal, PSG and Dortmund are almost guaranteed to overtake them this season. They then may need some help from the other English clubs to stop the next tier of clubs (the likes of Zenit and Porto) getting past them as well. And then next season they will lose all their points from winning in the CL in 2010-11 and it gets even worse for them.
They're already certain to be a 2nd pot team next time they're back in the CL. If England don't get lots of coefficient points this season, Man U could conceivably drop into the 3rd pot two years from now (assuming they're back in the Top 4) and then it's tough draws ahead and a long way back to the seeded spots.......
