Definitely, I would say.
Any unbiased person watching today's match would agree we dominated and should have won with our entertaining brand of football.
People have opinions about substitutions that should have been made, but nine times out of ten we would have beaten Westley's miserable bunch.
And nearly 400 more home fans than on Tuesday; not bad considering the shite from Stevenage that was entirely predictable.
Disappointed but not downhearted. Not remotely.

Agree totally. Rome wasn't built In a day and all that just think how good we might be under this crew with a pre-season.

No, definitely not downhearted. It was as you say. We dominated the game. I was very surprised at the lack of substitutions, as it was clear that both Barnett and the Stevenage defence were out on their feet. Jakubiak would have enjoyed that, I think. Morris would have done better and been more mobile than Barnett in the last 30 minutes, as well. But this is all tactical stuff - in truth we should have won the game anyway. My concern is, and has been, that we have become natural 'losers'. It's as if we have to totally destroy the opposition (as against Accy and Plymouth) just to win a game. We seem to have no killer capability to squeeze a result out of a tight game. Indeed, I strongly suspect that a stronger side than Stevenage (or, indeed, a full strength Stevenage) would have managed to nab a goal against the run of play (we still look weak defensively to me) to deny us even a point. It feels unfair, though, to be critical of the side when they are 'playing' well - and trying hard to play well. I'm sure they are even more gutted than we are at our current league predicament.

The one thing that came out of today's match is that if Hylton has an off day then the best we can hope for is a 0-0 draw.

Very much so. We should have collected three points today, but for the second game in a week I went home feeling I had watched an entertaining game of football. So different from the sterile stuff of last season.

Being 'natural losers' is pretty much what we've stopped being. In previous seasons I'd have been on the edge of my seat for the last 15 minutes as we dropped deeper and deeper, waiting for the away team to apply the coup de grace. This afternoon there seemed no way that Stevenage would score, and we kept on pressing them; the attitude is totally different. And we are doing that passing shit, looking more and more comfortable on the ball, Dowda and Ruffels are growing into the team. And we kept a clean sheet. I looked at the substitutes at half time and (apart from Potter) any one of them would have been an improvement on last season's team. Come on, what's not to like? COYY!

The spine is coming together, and I'd say we look anything but 'natural losers'. There's fight there, we're five games on the bounce of not 'losing' at the moment, so I'd say this is breaking a cycle. Positives to be had for sure.

"My concern is we've become natural losers" what are you on about, we are 5 games unbeaten. Come on Charlie don't put yet another negative on the table. Umm... I know that you live in the far west of England, and therefore probably never attend a game, but if you did then you would know that we have won 6 - yes SIX - games in eague 2 this calendar year. That is SIX victories out of 32 games. So in 2014 we are winning at the rate of one in every 5 games. And that has been so under Chris Wilder, Mickey Lewis, Gary Waddock and Michael Appleton. In fact, if one were to be very brutal one might point out that as far as I can recall we have only won one game in 2014 against a side with 11 players on the pitch for 90 minutes. This is not a point, therefore, against the current management. It is pointing out that, in the end, effectiveness does matter. We do need to get better - far better - at the business of actually scoring 3 points. Talk of 'unbeaten runs' makes me want to scream. We have just taken 5 points from the last 3 games. Who would not have rather have won 2 of those games and lost won, for a total of six points and the tear-jerking, devastating loss of our 'unbeaten run'. The 'unbeaten run' amounts to 7 points from 5 games (games that included Exeter, Accrington, Dagenham and an injury-ravaged Stevenage). That is, at best, lower mid-table form. So an improvement on bottom of the table form, but hardly the basis for your hallelujahs. I am capable both of appreciating sincerely what our players and coaches are trying to do, together with urging on them a steelier determination to grind out a few more wins. Because, unlike you, I do not enjoy being 21st in League 2.

Why does it make you want to scream? Yes, we'd all MUCH prefer wins, or course. But after the summer we have just had, and the complete upheavel on and off the pitch, anyone thinking we'd be challenging at this stage of the season was seriously in cuckoo land.
The WIlder tenure seriously ran its time. And tbf to Chris, he clearly got the best out of a below average group of players - but played a desperately safe brand of "let's not lose" football. What we're playing now is the best football we've had for years. The results aren't coming at the moment. But the unbeaten run is a start, in the right direction. Surely you see this after the time we've been having off field? If not Charlie, then you just don't get it.
And as for point 2, please point out where I have written that I enjoy being 21st in the league?
I am happy to discuss both points further with you this Saturday at Luton, over a pint.

The unbeaten run is a total and complete irrelevance, as a metric of success. You can win the Premiership without a significant 'unbeaten run', and get relegated from the League having been unbeaten in any number of games. It makes me scream because there is no logic to welcoming something which, in and of itself, is meaningless. So we draw against Daggers, Exeter and Stevenage. Is that actually something to cheer? Oh, sure, it's better than LOSING. It's also better than being put into administration. It's better than having shingles etc etc. But. It. Is. Meaningless. It neither denotes success, in the context of a League where a win gives you 3 points and a draw 1 point, nor does it denote a high level of performance. In answer to the more sensible question from Paul, yes, I do 'feel' that better times are coming. I too have enjoyed the way we have played this season. Far, far more than under CJ Wilder, whose style of play I detested. I am just trying to weigh that 'feeling' up against objective facts. I'm an experienced enough gambler to know that facts are ignored at your peril when looking to the future. I am also enough of a fan to desperately hope that all our 'feeling' is right.

On the one hand, we dominated, thus disproving the idea that we will find it difficult to play our way through cloggers. On the other hand, a patched-up team of cloggers (6 first teamers out injured) managed to restrict us to, what, 4 chances, with their keeper barely having a save to make. Take your point, though. At times today, we - and especially Callum in the 1st half - made them look very pedestrian. We'll never know if they might have put up a better show with their better players out on the pitch. I would say 'case unproven' as yet, but with some promise that with the extra beef of Barnett and extra guile of Howard we can do it.

Before the season started, it was almost imperative for me that we made the play-off at least. That was before I realised that Mapps was going to bring this attractive, worth watching style of football back to our club. I now have a totally different outlook for this coming season, and would be quite happy with mid table mediocrity, as long as we continue to play this way, because I'm sure eventually everything is going to click, even if it takes two seasons, or maybe three. Let's never go back to the crap we played before.

If we play like this every week, the crowds will return. Today we had a team that set out to spoil the game, they didn't come to play a game. I would rather watch this style of footy and get a 0-0, than a grab a goal and shut up shop as we did with Wilder. These days I feel excited watching this team.

Agree with point 2 - I too would far rather watch this style of football. With regard to point 1, I'm afraid I do not agree. Unfortunately, the nature of absentee fans means that they do not see the improved style of football. All they see is that we draw 0-0 against Stevenage. I bumped into an absentee fan in the fish and chip shop on the way back from the game. Trying to convince him that it was an exciting 0-0 - as I did - was fruitless, and I am having that experience time and again. Facts are that 5200 home fans turned up to the first Saturday of the season; 4300 turned up today. And that is despite our style of football having been consistently better than last season. Bottom line is that our floating support has largely given up on League 2. And watching Stevenage today, one could sympathise with them. What I do think is probable is that we are bedding in a style of football that means that if and when fans DO return, off the back of success, they are far, far more likely to stick around, having been reminded that it is a fun way to spend a Saturday.

Me, bitter? What am I bitter about? I think the point about the 12th Man, for those ITK, will betray the real bitterness here. N JONES, you have been exposed on here as a fibber - claiming to post under your name, as a member of OxVox (disproved) - so why don't you go off, change your username again and come back for more? I myself am perfectly happy - happy to have watched some entertaining football; disappointed that we failed to capitalise again. It really is that simple. As I say time after time - and most sane people can accept this - I like our management, agree that they're doing loads of things right, but still am concerned about our league position You talk about my 'time here'. What time is that? I have been a fan for 30 years, a trustee of the YCT for, I think, five years and a fundraiser for about 15 years (FOUL, founder member of OxVox, 12th Man etc) But, as I say, time for change in username before you reply, I think. And this time actually post under your real name - oh, unless you've been banned under that name! Shall we try for 'P Smith' this time? Maybe from Dundee? Abergavenny?

What's the sly dig here? Saying that our Man of the Match played well a sly dig? Eh? I'm delighted that he is being given his chance by Mapp, in a way he almost certainly would not have been under CJ Wilder. What's the dig? I remember doing Chinese history for A Level, and doing the Cultural Revolution. Half the problem was that Mao's most vociferous supporters started to second guess what Mao MIGHT have wanted them to see as 'off message'. That is where you are getting to now. I can bump into a player, or a coach, and they'll sincerely admit to being concerned by results, despite the performances. Not in a downcast way, but just in an honest way. Yet, those who yearn for a 'Dear Leader' scenario are trying to sniff out literally anything that does not reek of universal adoration of everything and everyone and stamp it out. I saw it before under Kassam, and was happy enough to ride out the attempts to impose a groupthink. Difference was that they (you?) were totally wrong then. Sad thing is that I think you are mostly right this time - and I am a huge fan of Mapp's, more than any other manager since Denis Smith - but the style of support required to match up to the standard you set is slightly uncomfortable for those who like to discuss, debate and ponder.

Love it. When Charlie writes it the way he wants it to sound (last para), then he's ok with it. When I write exactly the same point, he'll take it apart. And like someone else has said, I too thank my lucky stars CG didn't get the reins to our club (for more reasons each day from reading some of CG's posts). So black and white - when it suits you.

If some fans feel that they were short changed and not entertained today then I a would be truly astounded best football I've seen for years up there Don't think anyone was saying that they were short changed or not entertained today, so not sure where your comment has come from? I think we all agree that the football we're playing is entertaining or very entertaining at times this season, but what is concerning is, we're not getting enough wins or points on the board. Anyway, having said that I'd take this style of football anytime over the shite that Wilder used to serve up.

So, we've scored 11 (ELEVEN)goals in the last three games, but I'm sick of Wilder's negative tactics...wish I could be at the Kassam to watch Mapp and his total football...after all, It's not the result that counts...It's exciting footie that we want!!!

Being 'concerned' about anything is liable to get you into trouble pronto. Nice try and all with saying that you're happy about being entertained, but that's not good enough. You have to be both entertained, praising of our manager AND unconcerned. Being 'concerned' means you are not a real supporter. The Dear Leader expects more!
