so now he's told RM he wants to leave, there should be lots of clubs in for him if he's really world class.

Di Maria will go to Arsenal That would be hilarious, purely for the spectacle of watching Baldy make yet another dramatic u-turn. Suddenly di Maria would go from world class to Sunday league standard. As it goes it would be a decent signing, although I cant see him operating at wingback. Which makes you wonder how he fits in with mata in the number 10 role? Also £50m is stupid money, but when you consider ozil was £42m (I think) then it is consistent I guess.

Arsenal don't need him either.
Would be an even more ridiculous signing for them.

Arsenal don't need him either. Would be an even more ridiculous signing for them. Simple question. Why is he a ridiculous signing ? People constantly say Valencia, Young and Nani aren't up to it as wide men and also that Man U lack a bit of creativity through the middle. ADM, as a wide player/attacking midfielder, surely fits the bill in that respect. No one is saying they're getting him INSTEAD of central midfielders. Unless you think the three above mentioned players are consistently up to it then surely Di Maria is a sensible buy ?

Doesn't LVG favour a wingback system? That requires wide players who can also defend - like Luke Shaw for example.
In central midfield you've already got Mata and Kagawa as back up.
Just can't see where he's going to fit in - plus the fee is way over the odds.
Khedira is also on his way out, that would be a better signing IMO.

Man Utd are set up with 3 centre backs (Jones, Evans, Rojo), 2 centre midfield (Herrera, Carrick when fit), 2 wing backs (Shaw, Rafael when fit), and 3 up top (Rooney, van Persie, Mata) The question is where does he fit in? Right wing back? He hasn't the defensive responsibilities for this. In the middle? He's not a ball winner or able to dictate play. In place of Mata? Probably but why pay £50m to replace someone who cost £37m 7 months ago.

It is a signing that smacks of desperation from Woodward who wants to get any big name in to help win fans round. LVG has already said since taking over they have too many number 10's so it seems like they wouldn't bring in another player to play this role. The only place you can see him playing is wing back which Di Maria isn't. If they pay £50 million for someone they really don't need will just prove how much Man U as a club have gone down hill since Fergie left them.

Funny how we all agree. I just mentioned the possible signing to a couple of Man Utd fans at work and their reaction was surprise surprise exactly the same as mine and the two posts above. Not impressed, not the right player, wheres he going to play?

Maybe LVG wants to change the way he plays. Who's to say he's only operating the way he is due to personal? He's gone on record saying he needs better wingers. ADM is a very good winger.

He actually said last week that while Man U have capable wide men they don't have any of the quality of Ronaldo or Di Maria. People have read far too much in to this 3-5-2 wingback system LGV favours. He showed within 45 minutes against Swansea that he isn't a manager who will stick rigidly to one system if it's failing him. If Di Maria isn't deployed wide then he's great competition for Mata through the middle. It seems with some people that Man City and Chelsea can have like for like competition for places yet when Man U sign two quality players for one position there's a big who ah about where one of them will play. The answer is likely to be one on the pitch and one on the bench fighting for a starting place. What's the problem with that ?

If they sign another 6 players then fine, but £50m on one player and I doubt there will be many more coming in...

Don't worry about Man U, they will be right up there come May.

Surely it's a priority for lvg to identify and replace the current areas of weakness that man united have rather than look for competition for the position they're strongest in?! You could get Hummels and alonso/khadira for the 50m you'd pay for di Maria and they'd have a far bigger impact on where you finish! I thought scholes talked alot of sense in his recent article in the telegraph identifying alonso, khadiera, Hummels, varane and di Maria as the 5 players you need to compete this year. Although I'd say the first 4 should be the priority

Agree with Amarillo.
If there's one position where you're woefully short of quality and experience (CB), and one position where you have severe question marks (CM) - then going out and spending £50m adding competition in a position (#10) where you're already very well stocked raises a lot of eyebrows.
If they can fill the big voids in the squad in the next 10 days, then Di Maria is a potentially interesting and exciting (albeit expensive) signing.
If they can't, then he's not going to be able to do anything to drag them anywhere near Man City or Chelsea in the Premiership (the two sides with impressively balanced and capable squads) this season.
As I said before - Ed has 10 days now to save his job. Let's see what he can get done with the pressure on.......

Surely that is a large chunk of defensive frailty addressed ? There will be another centre back I guess. If Cuadrado comes then he's one of the best wing backs in the world without exaggeration. Evans to return from injury, a player with 250 first team appearances - the majority under Ferguson - and god knows how many titles to his name.

Jonny Evans has three Premiership titles to his name - and across those three seasons, cumulatively played in less than half the games. His performances so far in his career have been a veritable roller coaster, sometimes great, sometimes awful (and in some crucial games too......hello Everton 4-4 Man U) Rojo had a great World Cup but is 24 and has never played in a top European league. He's a good signing but doesn't resolve the situation single-handedly.....especially as he's probably also going to have to play left back/wingback until Shaw returns. Jones and Smalling are 22 and 24, and have had decidedly up-and-down careers to this point as well. It could be fine if each of those plays up to his potential over the next nine months. But it is a massive question mark. And I would hate to have a massive question mark in the centre of my defense. If I had £50m, I'd rather spend it on resolving that rather than adding competition to an already well-stocked forward line.

Only asking, because reaching the last 16,quarters,semis etc,is failure for in your eyes,or it is for Arsenal anyway.

I hope Di Maria can kick the ball a long way? P.S. I had Di Maria in my WC dream team and he scored me FA.

I've seen Rojo described as "a nutcase" by Sporting fans. Exciting talent, but hardly addressing defensive frailty. He's a gamble. And I would be almost 100% certain that you had never heard of Cuadrado before the World cup. Now he's one of the best wing backs in the world without exaggeration?! He had one good season for Fiorentina (and I'm pretty sure you'd usually describe the Italian league as second rate) and a good world cup. Another gamble.

Sporting Lisbon fans have been dishing the dirt on Rojo for the benefit of a United fans' forum. If what they say is accurate then two things seem clear: he is still not quite the finished article, but Van Gaal is as good a man as any to turn a hugely talented player into one of the world's best defenders. Here's what they had to say: "Sporting fans have a love/hate relationship with Rojo... He's a very physical player. He's pacy and a very good man marker... He has performed way better as a centre-back rather than as a left-back at Sporting. He can be an absolute beast and dominate games in a flawless way. But then there's the inconsistency. He is very prone to positional errors and concentration lapses. He is also a complete nutcase. He's been sent off so many times in very stupid fashion... It's always the same thing with Rojo. He gets sent off and costs us a game and he starts getting booed and people in the stands say that we are better off selling him. But then he comes back and plays spectacularly again... The key issue is that he needs a mentally strong and disciplinarian manager." uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/football-rojo-hints-man-utd-move-081815006--sow.html?soc_src=mediacontentsharebuttons
