I thought that save from Long was the best moment of the night, especially as he didn't see it coming until very late. His kicking was pants though. Hylton is going to be OK as a number 10, but last night confirmed what you, me, Mapp and everyone else knows - we need a experienced striker or two. Riley's side of defence was left exposed too many times by whoever the midfielder ahead of him was being out of position. A couple of decent crosses later on that a proper striker might well have got to. Meades played one or two delightful passes. Newey still backs off too much but while doing so doesn't get close enough to stop the man getting a cross or pass in easily. Our crop of youngsters looks very very promising, and I'd love to see them feature a lot this season. But let's not overdo it - putting them in as starters week in week out would do no favours to either them or the team in the long term. Having said that, Roberts certainly added something when he came on - we looked far more threatening. I still think that one up front doesn't work at this level - (almost) whoever that might be. Midfield looked much better or having Collins in it - the defence didn't improve for having Wright in it as compared to Mullins.
I enjoyed our play generally, there was a refreshing lack of hoofball, and thank god the close season is almost over! Looking forward to Saturday.

Technically light years ahead of what we have seen in previous seasons, will it suit what is required in league 2 only time will tell. Oh! We do need at least one proven goal scorer on the books.

I didn't go but reading this thread I'd say 1. it's harsh to criticise Hylton playing up front on his own with what appears to have been minimal support. 2. I don't think that strikers at our level are good enough to play 1 up front, certainly not at home.

I don't think that strikers at our level are good enough to play 1 up front, certainly not at home. The thing is, it's not one up front. It's one more advanced guy and then one or two more joining in. That is if 4-2-3-1 is done properly. So it's not about strikers being good enough to play this mythical (if it's not working), lonely, foraging role. It's about whether the three behind are good enough. When it doesn't work the 1 will receive the ball with no one near him or more advanced. He then has to make something from nothing so is labelled 'not good enough' I would also say that O'Dowda, Ruffels and Rose have probably never played as an individual 3 in pro football.

You've filled in the gaps in my post. Ideally the 1 or 2 other forwards join in and it could work; in practice we've failed to achieve the ideal so, as you say, "1 will receive the ball with no one near him or more advanced. He then has to make something from nothing so is labelled 'not good enough'".

I didn't go on my hols couldn't even get an internet signal so had to rely on a couple of mates they both agree we need strikers we were pants up front. I also read we are super close to a striker so that will be good if it comes off and is the striker we have been lacking since our return to the league.

I think the front line looked better when Roberts came on because Meades also came on. In the hole behind the striker he was much better than Rose, always looked for the ball, switched play well & (importantly) got up in support of Roberts. 4231 can be excellent, but it involves movement & support from multiple positions. If wingers stick as wingers or the player in the hole plays too deep you might as well play 451. Got to be flexible & provide support to the striker. I hope we persevere as it could work well if we get the right combinations. Collins moved forward and Meades played DM? Yes, you're right, fair enough. But the point still stands. Rose didn't support Hylton enough last night and there was a big change to our impetus once we started getting players forward in support of the striker.
