Vaguely remember during the 80s a song going 'we are oxford united my oh my. ' if we keep this team together, no one will beat us ever ' I think Ed Welch's song, referred to in my earlier post, was better than that. BTW, watching some repeats of One Foot in the Grave last night, I noticed that Ed was credited as composer of the "incidental music" for the series.

When you're smiling..............
Used to be our song, was mentioned on here a while ago, or maybe it was on TIU? Trouble is we haven't had much to smile about recently, and the attempts to bring it back fell flat due to the general malaise that has enveloped the last few seasons.

A song that inspires. Something that shows emotion. Not being afraid to laugh at ourselves, knowing, deep down, that we ARE the best. A song that's catchy (like a cold) and easy on the ear (like ear wax). A song that, even if you throw horse sh*t at it, still smells of roses. A ditty to be f*cking proud of - one that'll reverberate around the ground. Gentlemen, I give you.......................I'm a w*nker, by Ivor Biggun.

That Perkele song was perfect. Change/adapt the lyrics and we would have a unique song.

I believe it's not the choice of song- but the enthusiasm and gusto that's put into it, eg 'Delilah' - Not the most obvious or immediately inspirational, but it caught on, probably helps if those singing are well oiled and a bit nuts!!
So, just about any old song would do!!

Those were the days Mary Hopkins/Sandi Shaw* ( Dolly Parton covered it much later) ....a London Road favorite for quite a few seasons,.... the 'we fight and never loose' line led to an 'adapted' version too!( hehe) * trivia note....Eurovision song contest winner (with Puppet On A String) Sandi Shaw lives in Marcham ....so there is a 'local' connection if theres a desire for the Oxford United club song to be a kind of League of Gentlemen style local song for local people :-D ..... Sandi Shaw released her version first, however Mary Hopkins folkier version topped the UK singles charts in the late 60s ( when the singles charts actually meant something) .... and the opening verse perhaps has a topical 'reference' to the closed and derelict Priory too :-D Link for Mary Hopkins version ....complete with Lyrics on screen ( lots of lalalala's too :-D :-D easy to learn/join in with) www.youtube.com/watch?v=3un5f6qLi_kSandi Shaw' version ( not a lot of difference from Mary Hopkins take) www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHonSjOq6GU

Trouble is we haven't had much to smile about recently, and the attempts to bring it back fell flat due to the general malaise that has enveloped the last few seasons. good choice ....London Road fave late 60s early 70s ....complete with added shout outs complimenting and extending the massed London road singing the song...such as.. 'get off me barrow', 'I got a shotgun' and other (at the time) amusing quips....though that was in the days when going to Football was a genuinely fun experience, with terraces bouncing at times ( 'knees up mother brown' etc etc)

Knees up mother Brown?
Wasn't it " who's up Mary Brown? Who's up Mary Brown? Tommy Tommy Docherty , Tommy Tommy Docherty?
Also, with when you're smiling, I don't remember 'get off me barrow' but do remember ' get off the Manor'
Or are we just getting old and forgetful Sarge?

The club song - I prefer"Anthem" - isn't something that you can contrive; it's got to sort of happen. Nail on head If we're going to get one it'll come from some inebriated wags on a Tuesday night v tranmere that will inexplicably catch on Closest we've had lately is the "in the mixer" An anthem would be great, just something that over time gets associated with the club. Not much I ever liked about Bristol Rovers but their singing of 'Goodnight Irene' which seemingly has nothing to do with football is timeless and for me is the best of the lot. They belt it out with real passion. Birmingham's 'Keep on till the end of the road' and of course Coventry's play up Sky Blues are also good Let's never end up with some god awful chant like 'Play Up Pompey', I feel like throwing up every time I hear it

what was wrong with Perkele? It's a Swedish Nationalist Pride song, but I thought it suited our club pretty well. "My heart beats for you the yellow and the blue".... although maybe a lyric change to "my heart bleeds for you" Perkele may just be the best option, nothing to do with football but totally linked to us

the entire lyrics to 'those were the days' .(...especially for those under 30)
Once upon a time there was a tavern Where we used to raise a glass or two Remember how we laughed away the hours And think of all the great things we would do
Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la... Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Then the busy years went rushing by us We lost our starry notions on the way If by chance I'd see you in the tavern We'd smile at one another and we'd say
Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la... Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Just tonight I stood before the tavern Nothing seemed the way it used to be In the glass I saw a strange reflection Was that lonely woman really me
Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la... Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Through the door there came familiar laughter I saw your face and heard you call my name Oh my friend we're older but no wiser For in our hearts the dreams are still the same
Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la... Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Perkele or yellow submarine .
In the town where I was born lived a man called Appleton. Can be adapted to changes at the club, while remaining an anthem . Would be my ring tone 2moro as well if we did
