MAPP's quotes in the mail regarding a striker... He said: “It’s about getting the right one and from what I’m being told we’re not close, we’re super close on certainly one. “That will give everyone a big lift going into Saturday’s game. “He’s someone I’ve been aware of for a while and saw him play and do really well at the back end of last season.” Sounds like dzeko

Judging on the comments from the MAPPster and making a massive assumption, I'd think the super close signing was from a club higher up.

Craig Davies. Done well at Appletons old club Preston (a team he would be likely to have been watching) on loan at the end of last season, after a slow first half of the season at Bolton. We've already got Riley in from Bolton so who knows, though it's a longshot!

Perhaps it's just me but from his quotes, to me, it sounds as if there is certainly a couple that will be brought into the club as we are 'super close on one'. That to me, suggests there are other targets as well. Good news!

I'm excited now, hopefully it's someone who justifies this excitement.

This signing will make or break our season. It's that important.

I though that was Alsop, never heard anything of Davies being involved or are you referring to another incident?

Snap up Wolves number 10 from last night. Is that the one who was constantly offside

Three things to point out.
One - Appleton wasn't ever at Preston, so they are not his former team. (WBA, Pompey, Blackburn and Blackpool)
Two - Davies wasnt involved in the "Alsopgate" saga.
Three - Davies was involved with a behind the scenes staff members wife, which as you'd imagine, didn't go down too well as well as a few other things that he did. So he was sold to Verona - quick smart.

Appleton played 140+ times for Preston - I think the poster was making the point that they were the main part of his short playing career and he may still have contacts there.

Great shout, would fit in with what everything MApp has said and would be a cracking signing. Bury after him as well so we'd have to beat them to it. Would only be a season long loan though...

no it was both Alsop and Davis Alsop was sacked and Davis eventually got sold to Verna but he was definitely invoved. The 'banana' incident never happened, according to a friend of mine who worked for BBC Oxford. There was a fracas with a youth teamer, but no fruit based sexual assault occurred. Craig Davies fell out with Talbot which resulted in his move to Hellas Verona. It's a masisve shame as he would have certainly got us some goals in that season where we were relegated. I'd be thrilled to see him back. He seems to yo-yo between outstanding seasons in the lower leagues and then fair to middling seasons in the Championship. I don't imagine we will see him back, but it would be a real coup for MApp if he manages it.

Like I've said countless times, getting a striker in by now would've been very easy if we were taking any old guy. The amount of time we've had to wait suggests that we will be very very happy with this imminent forward

I just hope after all this build up its a BIG signing, and a sign of intent shown to others in league two that we mean business. I really hope it's not a BIG disapointment.
Id also rather it was a permanent signing rather then a season long loan, but have a feeling it could be the later.

I still dont know why people get excited by it?...a BIG SIGNING for OUFC would mean a name on his way back down the leagues with nothing to prove to the likes of us. We are in L2 with aspirations to get promoted this coming season I hope. What we need is mostly young, fit, mobile, and disciplined individuals who can play on a Saturday, and by Monday morning are raring to go for a Tues night up in Carlisle.
I have seen a distinct lack of passion from OUFC players at the back end of last season. Thats the main difference in L2.

It don't have to be someone on the way down. Certainly the two loan signings r the complete opposite. It could be some one who's just stalled or championship is just that bit hard for them. Someone like blackstock or Davis certainly not at the end of their playing days but would be amazing signings at this level.

They're only 28, that's supposedly a footballers prime, I certainly wouldn't say they're at the end of their playing days. Not that there's much chance of them coming. Appleton's built it up now, hoping it's not anticlimactic.
