Not surprising really as he is 34 and has 114 caps With his club very likely to be near the top of the PL in the coming season and Champions League games to play he will be needed more by them

best for all concerned I think. Had a very poor WC, allows one of the youngsters to really come to the fore in an England shirt.

Time for Wilshere and Barkley to step up.
Lets hope Lampard does the right thing and retires.

It's about time he gave up. He should have been dropped well before the WC.

Good decision. Would like to see Lallana/Cahill given the captaincy now.

Struggling to remember when -if at all Gerrard had anything other than a mediocre game for England. I hope this has the domino affect and more of the dead wood fall on their swords.

How can you forget Germany 5-1! I can remember the result, but nothing to write home about regards Gerrard, Owen made the headlines due to his hat trick- naturally. It was a fantastic result, but Germany then were pretty poor. Have you any other examples of when Gerrard played anywhere near his Club form whilst playing for his Country? Yes, this 'problem' is not just confined to him.

Been watching football for over 50 years, cant ever remember a ""pretty poor" German team P.S.I was in Munich that night (along with about 30 other OUFC lads)and Gerrard was MOM,if he (and Owen)had been fit for that years WC,we might, just might, have won it. Great player who did his best for his country, realised his legs have gone and will devote himself to his club. Unlike Scholes who deserted his country while still at the top of his game.

Should have retired 4years ago. Handed a win to Chelsea which finished their season. Then handed his them team mate, the odious Saurez a goal to doom England.

I don't blame Gerrard for the world cup exit. Watch Jageilka's positioning and it's actually due to him that Suarez scored. As for Gerrard playing for england he has been a steady player who did the simple things well. It is the right time for him to retire though and this will only benefit Liverpool even more. The next captain I would like to see is Cahill or Hart. I expect Rooney will be handed it though.

But hart uses head and shoulders. We need a captain who uses aloe vera and smothers his bollocks with cocoa butter don't we?

I hate how we make such a big deal over the captaincy for the national team.
It should be selected match by match. Say for example you give it to 'player X', that player will play regardless of form or fitness, its nonsense.
Rooney should not be captain, he has enough pressure playing for England as it is. The last thing he needs is the Sun sitting on his shoulder waiting for a picture of him smoking a cigarette or drinking full fat coke on a sunbed and calling him a disgrace.

No loss at all. On the whole he's been shite for England.
Good riddance. His leadership in this WC just gone was hopeless. We were toothless from front to back.

Yet another deserter alongside Scholes, Shearer, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Carragher, Wes Brown, Heskey. Yes he should have dropped by Roy Hodgson, but I would rather players make themselves available for their country in case the replacements don't pan out, a bit like David Beckham did.
People say he's done the honourable thing - no he hasn't. He's deserted his country in order to further his career at Liverpool - you have to wonder how much of an influence Brendan Rodgers had on his decision?

I still don't understand this "I'm retiring from international football" bollocks. It's not your choice. It's the manager's. It is as if the poor petals aren't psychologically robust enough to simply not be selected. "I already quit, so you can't fire me. Ner ner ner."

This is up there with one of your most stupid posts ever and that takes some doing. His legs are going and he has maybe 1 or 2 years left in him at club level so of course he will do it partly for his club, they are the ones who pay his wages. Why would he not retire when he knows his body is not up to it any more?

If he isn't up to it, then why doesn't he retire from Liverpool as well? It seems odd to me that you are suggesting he isn't physically up to the demands of International football, yet will no doubt be fully fit to turn out for Liverpool in the 50-60 games they will be playing this season, including the Champions League where the standard of football will on a par with what we saw in the World Cup. Seems funny that you never get players retiring from club football.

So in other words, he's in it for the money - just like other mercenaries I mentioned earlier. Here's a quote for you... "His international debut was in 1990 against Italy and two months later he scored his first goal for his country against Greece. He was a regular ever since until he retired at international level after Euro 2000." That is about Denis Bergkamp. Bloody mercenary, retiring from the international game, only interested in money. Or is that different?

You will also find that he missed quite a number of Champions League matches too.

"He announced his retirement from international football at the age of 31 after a disappointing semi-final exit from UEFA EURO 2000 in order to concentrate on his club career in England." Sorry, for a moment I thought you were displaying double-standards there...

No he isn't physically up to playing for England and Liverpool any more. Liverpool are his employers not England. Take the money away from it and look at it in a different way. You have a job and also do extra volunteering along side that job however the volunteering is starting to affect the way you work in your other job. Because it is your job and they pay your wages you decide to stop doing the volunteering. To also claim Gerrard has abandoned his country after making 114 appearances is quite frankly stupid.

So a player announces his retirement from internationals and some slate him for it...At least he didn't have "mystery" injuries or illness on the day of England games yet be fully recovered for his club team by saturday like so many do...There is very little pride in representing your country these days but Gerrard at least wanted to make himself available. We are in a club v country situation and have been for years and that is not going to change whilst the poor luvvies are rapped in cotton wool whilst being paid absolute fortunes.
How unusual though that the man utd supporters on here are not even man enough to admit that stevie g is a decent footballer who largely did a good job for his country, instead it's the normal stuff from the mancs and they wonder why the country does not respect them.

There are two sorts of 'international retirement' though, aren't there? There's the 'I'm still good enough to be picked, but no longer want to be for whatever reason' like Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard and 'I'm retiring from international - not that anyone was going to pick me for any serious game anyway' like Wes Brown and Emile Heskey. The latter are always funny - it would be like Matt Taylor or Dean Whitehead retiring from international football!
As for Stevie G, his influence as a Liverpool player is waning so it was only inevitable that his England career would suffer too. He had a poor World Cup and his calling of time on the national team comes as no surprise. In a typical overblown PL manner, the media have gone crazy on the eulogies for Gerrard's England career. He was a good performer but not great. There have been a number of better players than him over the years.

What's Lahms excuse at the ripe old age of 30? That's quite silly. He will go down as one of Germany's greats (world cup winner and other things, scored the first goal in 2006) but he does seem like a deserter now. He's done the wrong thing
