Just watched/listened Roberts interview on Yellow player. Blimey, what a well spoken young man he is. How old is he? 17? Not many players after 10 years could come across in a video interview as well as that. And I assume. not that I've seen him play, a footballing talent (2 goals in what 120 minutes?). With him and Ashby the future is looking better.

I really believe he's going to be a great player in a few years. The goal gave him a huge amount of confidence today, and he fashioned a couple of great chances for himself just afterwards, as he fills out and his hold-up play comes on, he's going to be a key player for us.
I think a couple of people have discounted Marsh with the success of Roberts, though, which I think is unfortunate, because they're both looking like real prospects this season, and actually quite different players. The future looks bright with these youngsters.

I've followed Roberts' progress for some time and I believe the lad has what it takes to make it as a professional. Good work rate and is a good finisher. Took his goal well today. I think he has a better chance of becoming a first team regular than Marsh.

From what I've read about him and purely his stats also his goals this pre season. I really believe we've got our selfs a real star. Him, Ashby & Humphreys will be stars.

Isn't it fantastic that we have 3-4 excellent prospects at last. When did we last have this (I am thinking the 1970's with Foley, Tait. Taylor, Sweetzer, White, Jeffrey etc)
I really hope the supporters go and watch the team and get behind the youngsters.

I have no doubt that Roberts is a great talent and one for the future but if we are to rely on a 17yr old this season then we are going to be struggling!! Mapp needs to bring in another 2 strikers IMO!! Will be interesting to see how good Roberts does against wolves and Bournemouth!

Welcome to the jungle I know it's a jungle, So we are destined to stay a L2 side as we only breed players for other clubs, So it says the club has no commitment to try and push for higher achievements with in league football. Any players worth selling we only get peanuts in comparison with other cubs selling similar players.

If we're producing players from our youth team that clubs higher up the leagues are willing to pay for then we are onto a winner. Its all about where we are on the food chain in the football league.
If we get money from transfer fees and sell on fees then it will only help our push for promotion up the leagues. The higher we are in the leagues then the less likely we will have to sell so soon.
Its a good thing for the club when teams higher up the leagues want to buy our players.
EDIT: Also for the record from what little I have seen of Ashby and Roberts I reckon we will be picking up fees for them in the future

Probably will be but how are we going to progress up the league if we sell our better players and will we command a decent fee and with bigger clubs pursuing through the tribunal for a transfer fee we end up with peanuts, Also we could be waiting for a long time for any sell on fee.

No I am not worried to much foley, But we have to compete to achieve better things at OUFC so we do need to keep our best youngsters for as long as possible to achieve this. The thing that annoys me is other clubs have a decent young player and put a huge price tag on their player and they seem to get that figure, Yet we don't get anywhere near what we ask. Hopefully with a new ceo in Ashton we can bargain hard.

When we have a player who is actually worth a huge price tag then we will get that money. For me the most talented youngster I have seen come through at Oxford who would of commanded a huge fee was Jamie Brooks, I think he would of had a solid career in the premiership.
It was heart breaking what happened to him. But as for selling our youngsters, its not like they will be sold after a few games is it? For someone to be willing to pay a fee then they would have to of seriously contributed to our season.
Look at Crewe, perfect example of what you can achieve by producing and selling youngsters.

That right but when we sell we have to start all over again without the club achieving any thing! Simple.

Ok, how about looking at it this way....
Lets say James Constable had agreed terms with Swindon that time, what was it? 200k-250k? So are you telling me we wouldn't of been able to use that money to replace him and to help our promotion push that year?
We would of been starting again?

We would of been starting again? Im on about youngsters wh should eventually be the backbone of the club, But along comes utd/city/Albion or whoever offer a piffle of an aount we go to tribunual they order a piffle of an amount and a sell on clause which may or may not materialise and do the club re-invest.... Whiteheads sell on fee?

I think comparing this to Whitehead is irrelevant, the structure of transfer fees has changed immensely since those times. We may have been a little naive at the time, I dn't think we would now.
Crewe is quite a bad comparison actually, an admirable record of producing players, woeful in progressing the club up the leagues.

Unfortunately, this is more the case than ever. We sold Blackstock without even playing for us I believe, before you knew it he was in Southamptons 1st team. A current example is a kid called Reece Oxford who the big guns are talking serious money about and he is only 15.
The best for OUFC is to climb the leagues with these kids and then sell them at championship level at least. If Roberts had an outstanding season (ie 20 gls) in L2 he could fetch maybe a million plus sell on. In the league above you could treble that.
