Just read the latest post from The Secret Footballer and it's not very enthusiastic about pre-season running and the prospect of a hip operation in the coming years.
It does imply that he will be continuing however - interesting to hear what MAPP says...

Kitson has had his contract paid off, and has left the football club (apparently)

Perhaps change from player to player coach so will not be playing as much now?

If true then we need another 2 midfielders in! Unless Appleton has faith in someone like Shama or Ashby to play the number 10 role?

If we're trying to free up wages then why would we pay Kitson off? What you gain in space on the wage bill, you lose in the lump sum. And why would we pay him off if he wants to retire?

That's not how it works, ur wage budget is linked to ffp . He can pay him off he's not on the wage bill. So although it cost u the same it means u have more of a percentage of ur earnings available to spend. If that makes sense. If he's retired we wouldn't pay him anything. If Appleton didn't want him if he's not going to play as a striker then we would pay him off. Personally don't think we will miss him, another player with talent who did less good things than bad like bookings , injuries , being to deep

A good move for all concerned.
We need hungry, enthusiastic and fit players. With the best will in the world Kitson was none of those.
Yes he had some lovely touches but our highest earners need to consistently change games. Kitson didn't do that anywhere enough.
As for paying him off, the two parties negotiate a lump sum. The club doesn't just pay him a year and off he goes
Replace him with someone on the up rather than the way down

Too inconsistent for me to be all that disappointed if this is indeed true, also means we should be able to get in another striker who can offer us some much needed goals.

I won't miss him. For what he had in raw talent, he lacked in his inability to play upfront. He wasn't good as a midfielder, he stayed way too deep to have any meaningful impact in most games and isolated the lone striker who needed his help. For his height, he never seemed to want to be the focal point for attacking set pieces, preferring to stay outside of the box. And the way he stopped playing to appeal for a freekick was woeful. It's not a typical Premier League player attitude, it's just plain stupid. I for one will be happy if it's confirmed that he's gone. A good individual player, but not a good team player at all.

Kitson, while obviously a talented player (plenty of fancy flick ons on the halfway line) did nowhere near what he was brought into the team to do... ie play as a striker and score goals!

A decent summary. I've enjoyed watching him - he's a good footballer despite his petulance and the theatrics. One thing is for sure though; the OUFC "squad" minus Kitson looks really threadbare. It was worryingly threadbare this morning and with Kitson possibly leaving the club we need new players like there is no tomorrow. The squad is bereft of creative talent and of course goals.

Certainly not a disaster if he has gone. Undoubtedly still got something, but actually made a significant contribution too few times for me. I also think that there was a temptation for other players to 'give it to Kitson' rather than taking responsibility themselves.

Strange, the Head Coach wants to add experience to his young squad and then lets one go who wanted to help bring our youngsters on!

Picks up too many yellow & red cards to be an effective player for our team that's looking to play at a higher level Remember the farce last season when he was on the verge of missing important games over the Christmas period if he got booked, which he promptly did and we ended up dropping points,we stood a better chance of getting the right result if he played

Could just be an injury? lets not write his obituary just yet If it was an injury Appleton would've said so before the game instead of declining to comment until the final whistle.

If you take Dave Kitson as being the Secret Footballer. You read the new blog post which appeared today www.thesecretfootballer.com/articles/the-secret-footballer/20587/sands-of-time-running-out/Add it to his absence from the team and Appleton's reluctance to comment until after the game. You'd say he is probably retiring from football after realising he can't keep up with it anymore. I think it was obvious last season that Kitson himself was frustrated with his body not allowing him to do what he wanted to do. Lets wait for Appleton's comments but I would put money on Dave Kitson not being a player at Oxford United for the coming season.

Didn't Kitson say at the start of last season that the hardest part was getting the motivation to get through pre season?
If he's still thinking like that then it's most probably true that he's decided to call it quits.
If that was the case then the club will tear his contract up, rather than pay him off.
Again, if that's the case, it's win/win for everyone involved. He gets out of his contract and, if rumours are to be believed, we clear a massive strain on the wage bill.

why the need to wait until after the game?
People say that want to see talent at the club yet fail to notice it staring them in the face
we keep seeing the same comments but wilder stated when he came he was not going to play up front so who brought the problem some seem to have?
