Mclean needs to start scoring a few goals. Rubbish. If McLean continues playing as he is, but doesn't score another goal for the rest of the season (which is highly unlikely) then I doubt many will care at all. Macca brings a whole lot more to the side and you only have to look at how our other stikers are improving and growing in confidence to see he is well worth his place goals or no goals.

I agree with HP, Maclean is worth his place because we don't easily lose possession with him up front, he keeps the ball. The same goes with McClaren in midfield.
We should stick with this team, we have shown even after going a goal down we can come back playing possession football. No panicking, losing shape and hoofing the ball in desperation as we have done in the past.
Now that the left winger has arrived we now have a plan B, if CW wants to change it to 442 we have a pacey right and now left winger.

What appens if he gets injured and isnt playing do the other players give up. You dont have to get personal it is only a question , are the other players not capable of making chances?

message for socrates.Did he play against Torquay away when we scored four.Mcleans job is to make and score goals as the other strikers do.Are we saying he cant create a chance for himself. I do not get confused watching the games i am a realist not a t*at who gets personel when any one else has a opinion.

I agree with all of the comments windows has made since joining the forum. I just don't see why Wilder persists with his favoured 4-3-3 formation when it's clear that a 5-0-5 formation would work better. We don't need to pass the ball around in the midfield because the quickest way to go forward is to hoof it from the back right up to the strikers. With these tactics we should be scoring at least 5 or 6 in each match!

It's no wonder Maclean doesn't score huge numbers of goals when you study his position on the field. If we could create a chalkboard for one game you'd see that he is constantly in the midfield or deep on the wings hunting for the ball. Once he is on the ball, Beano, Craddock, Clist, Hall and Batt/Tonkin (depending on what side we're on) all make runs in the knowledge that they will be found if they get into space. Since Macca came in, we're been making runs off the ball with conviction because the players believe that Maclean will link up with them.
Very rarely is Maclean on the shoulder of the last man. However, when Craddock in particular has the ball, Maclean's movement is good. He will get chances when Craddock or Beano have dropped deeper to get the ball but 9 times out of 10, Maclean will do that job and be the provider.
He's given Craddock someone equally intelligent to play with and he has given Beano, a striker who has all the raw qualities a striker needs but isn't always as intelligent as the other two, a link man. Week by week, Beano is improving his runs and other aspects of the game that are in the brain as a result of the link player behind him. Macca's brought out the best in both of our strikers and we're a far more cohesive unit as a result.

I'm confused now!
I thought everyone knew what a holding midfielder did?
Hold position? Track runners? Win the ball? Then move it on with a simple short pass?

I'm confused now! Then move it on with a simple short pass? This is where your confused. The best Holding midfielders are creative ie Carrick, Alonso ect . Being a holding midfielder does not mean you can't be creative! Payne is clearly played as a holding midfielder for Oxford but as you know is very creative. Bullman and Hargreaves were clearly not holding midfielders (by your own description of holding midfielder), they played much further up the park and did not sit in front of the defence. Murray, well at times he was played just behind the striker but often he was played as a holding midfielder (creating things from deep) while Clist and Bullman played further up the park. Bullman would just as easily be seen chasing down the opposition defence as he would be chasing down their strikers! I Just think people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!

Reply to all of you football experts who obviously only have one opinion and that is your own.I dont know if you actually go to many home games , but as i saw it we were creating plenty of chances not scoring and getting beat by teams who we completely outplayed.Hence we brought in a striker who i assumed was going to put the ball in the net.But alas according to everyone else no he was going to create more chances for us to miss.If you look in todays Oxford Mail he admits he needs to start scoring some goals.I do not doubt his capabilities but as i said before he needs to score a few goals .Hopefully iof you go and watch the games you will not get confused

Now, if you look at the signing itself, that sort of makes sense. Early on in the season, we were creating chacnes but couldn't put them away. However, Maclean was signed during our bad run, where we weren't even creating chances. He's now here, and not only are we creating chances but scoring them. Coincidence? You can't argue based on past needs, because they aren't what we need now or even at the time he was signed. And how can a person have more than one opinion on the same situation anyway? Surely if you have an opinion on something, that by definition stops you from having a differing opinion on the same subject?

Correct we all have our opinions i differ from yours we were creating chances even through our bad patch but not scoring eg Macclesfied away we should have been 6 up at half time instaed of 2 lost 3 2 Downhill for a while after that , still making chances but not scoring.Mclean came in still lost a few games chances created still couldnt score,The team is playing with more confidence Lets hope Mclean scores a few.As i said previuos read the oxford Mail and he agrees with my statement,

So we wasn't creating many chances in our bad run at all. Seeing your posts since you've joined, i'm certain your on a wind up.

Macclesfield was right at the start of our bad run, and by all rights it wasn't our finishing that let us down but the fact that our defence fell to pieces in the second half. After that, we didn't really make chances that much. Bradford, Burton, Gillingham we hardly had any chances. Last one admittedly Maclean was playing (I don't think he really played much in the others? Was that his debut?) but he was a lone striker, the exact role he doesn't like. Even then we could still see his quality, but the moment he was partnered up front, his class really shone through (man of the match performance vs Chesterfield). While it would be nice to see him score more goals, I don't think he needs to, although I don't doubt he'll want to improve his goal tally.

Having watched the game today closeley my observations regarding Mclean, he does not score goals neither does he look like scoring, all this creating chances really? He spent to much time trying these fancy flicks sadly they did not come come off. As one plymouth fan said spends to much time with his back to goal ,doesnt score enough goals .Ps next game give Midson a chance he can hold the ball up and score.Maybe Mclean needs a rest. Debate over,

Not his best game today, should have looked for a goal more, but far from debate over. He definitely created a few chances, but perhaps dropped too deep at times, we weren't overly creative today apart from our fullbacks.

Well i must have blinked and missed that chance, the only time we looked dangerous was when we got the ball forward quickly, games like this we need a quick winger to stay on the wing and stretch the game across the pitch to create a bit of space. We still try and play the ball through a packed midfield we have to alter our approach with a bit of variation we are to predictable.

While some of what you say is correct ie moving ball quicker at times, our wing play was excellent at times. The system we play allows our fullbacks to be our wingers and both were great at times.

You mean apart from every time Batt and Tonkin got the ball? What about Asa Hall's forward runs? Quite a lot of those were so good because Maclean held the ball up, I don't know how you missed it.
When we hoofed the ball up from the back the only reason we looked dangerous was because Beano is a master at battling the defence. And even then, that was far from every time we hoofed it up.

We didnt hoof the ball we passed it wide quickly, hoofing it up wouldnt help the centre backs were so big they won everything in the air.You do not have to hoof it up to get the ball upfield quickly you pass it to a player preferably on the ground, i dont know what sort of football you watch.

Well maybe we ought to keep Hoofing it as you say. Why would we want to keep hoofing it? We are trying to play good passing football and at times it is a joy to watch. There are times in any game at any level where the ball is hoofed.

If you can't see what MacLean brings to the team, or the difference he has made since joining you are either on a wind up or no nothing about football. Either way I find your replies (apparently based solely on today) laughable and make you look a bit of a dick.

Hang on fellows....spare a thought for us old farts.....we find life confusing as it is - reading your expert thoughts I am now even more confused than ever.
Anyway, which one is this MacClean bloke you lot keep on about?
Have to say the old farts enjoyed a convivial pre-match meal where we discussed the merits of 'cockalorums at large' - cant' remember the outcome though.
