What makes people think they have the right to tell women what they can or can't do? this isn't an islamic state yet. Try telling my daughter she can't do something and she will do it just to prove you wrong. I've told my daughter she cant pee in mens toilets. She agrees it would be a stupid idea. How about instead of coming up with crappy analogies you could actually answer the question of why you don't think it should be allowed.

You say that, but I would pay good money to see a giraffe breakdance... ;D Dressage is just Crufts for people with loads of money. A breakdancing giraffe would be an entirely different (and hilarious) situation. How come i've never seen Richard Branson or Lakshmi Mittal or Roman Abramovich do it then?

Did you know, foghorn, what the highest decibel level recorded at these Games has been? It's Women's boxing - whenever Katie Taylor has fought.
There are a lot of people (not all of them Irish) who want to watch Women's boxing, and a lot more after yesterday's fights.
And I can't see an argument in any of your posts against it, other that flagrant sexism. So much so that if it was Moobs or Hoodsy, instead of yourself, I would assume a spot of whooshing was going on.
Gender quality does not mean that Women and Men are the same - but it does mean that Women and Men should have the same opportunities. And you're trying to deny Women the opportunity to box on the grounds of.....well, I can't quite see the grounds other than you seem to find it distasteful.

seriously?! I honestly can't comprehend how any right-minded person can hold that view (and you usually seem like a right-minded person!) I love boxing, probably not more than everybody else but I suspect more than most on here. People who pay a passing interest in boxing and sport will happily (miss)quote equality and women must be given the rights and that means they must box. People inside boxing now and understand boxing a lot better, they now what the sport really is. Whilst boxing can be beautiful, it is never any other than pure thuggery. This is the appeal of boxing but also why so many boxing people are against women taking part. There is reason the BBBC wouldn’t licence women’s boxing until 1998, and why internationally the sport didn’t exist as anything other than a freak show until that point. Frank Maloney still describes it as a freak show (personally I don’t like term). When boxing mad countries like Cuba are against it (a country that pretty much owns amateur boxing and hasn’t lacked strong women!), and thoughtful people like cassius clay are against it then we should pause for thought. Equality doesn’t mean ‘must become the same as’; what a sad day that would be. In algebra, a = b doesn’t mean ‘a is the same as b’, it means they have equal weighting. There is a subtle difference that gets lost. No self-respecting ‘b’ should want to be an ‘a’! Anyway, that’s enough of that. I’m off to watch the men’s final of synchronised swimming. If brutality is the sole reason why women shouldn't be allowed to box, then maybe it should be banned outright? I suspect men's boxing is just as, if not more brutal and they can hit a lot harder too, thus doing more damage. It cuts both ways. I'm a boxing fan and it would be a sad day for sport if boxing was banned, but that argument falls flat on it's face as far as I'm concerned. Who cares what sexist dinosaurs like Frank Baloney think - he would fit in well over in Saudi Arabia, where women aren't allowed to drive, leave the house or breathe without a male's authority. As for Cassius Clay/Muhammed Ali - Are you sure about that? You are aware that his daughter Leila Ali is also a professional boxer?

If someone dies in F1 should it be banned?

Is that question to me? If so just to reiterate, I am totally AGAINST the banning of boxing. The point I'm making is that there is no way it can be too dangerous for women, yet perfectly safe for men.
If people want to get in the ring, then that's up to them. Men or women.

So in summary, women shouldn't box because boxing isn't nice and women should be nice?
The logic argument you've used to say women shouldn't box surely if you believe it should go further and say that children of any gender shouldn't box either. Amir Kahn was 17 when he won silver in Athens, surely he should not have been able to take part as he was still a minor?

Bit of an odd one from foghorn whose arguments are usually some of the best on here. Obviously there's a gut reaction going on but it would be interesting to have a cogently argued statement against female boxing rather than just 'its wrong.'

I'm with foghorn on this one. If women are boxing then who is doing the dishes and the washing?
